BU Pushes No. 16 PLNU

Biola went toe-to-toe with No. 16 Point Loma on Thursday night but could not overcome.

LA MIRADA --- Biola (4-13, 2-7 PacWest) returned home on Thursday and faced a tough challenge, taking on the undefeated Sea Lions of Point Loma (15-0, 9-0 PacWest). The fight was back and forth and tight-knit through the first two sets but it was the Sea Lions to clinch the win in three sets.

Biola and Point Loma faced off for the first time this season and the Sea Lions entered the night ranked 16th in the national poll and having lost just six sets through 14 matches.

The first set was dead even with eight ties and a back and forth battle throughout. Biola outhit the visitors, 13-12 in kills, with Payton Tully nabbing five alone. A five-point run for the Sea Lions created the first separation, as PLNU opened up a 23-17 lead, before closing set one at 25-20.

Set number two seemed to be the turning point for Biola. The Eagles stepped up and took control with a strong attack, boasting an early 8-3 lead and forcing a PLNU timeout. The advantage peaked at eight points, 17-9, with the BU offense rolling. Through the set, BU tallied 18 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. Following the strong start, Point Loma started working its way back and cut the deficit to three at 23-20. PLNU did not relent and went perfect through the final five rallies, sneaking away with a 25-23 set win.

The final set began within range for Biola, as the host squad was only down by three at 10-7. The rest of the way, PLNU outscored the Eagles 15-5 for a 25-12 finish to set three.

Kendall Vandertuig put together a strong performance with a team-high 13 kills on 28 swings. She logged at least three kills in each set, including six in the second set alone. Tully was not far behind on Thursday, closing the match with 11 kills and a .316 hitting percentage.

The Eagles offered up an assist for every kill, as Lexi Lambert and Hannah Hanson combined for 33 helpers.

Biola will be back on the court on Saturday, hitting the road to face Concordia at 5:00 pm.
