Late Surge Comes Up Short

Despite Biola’s spirited fourth-quarter push, #17 Santa Clara’s early lead was too much to overcome, resulting in a 14-8 loss for BU?.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Day two of the Lancer Joust commenced on Saturday and the Biola Eagles (6-18) fell to the No. 17 Santa Clara Broncos (9-4) by a score of 14-8. The Broncos came out strong, taking control early and securing a significant lead in the first quarter. Despite a late-game push by Biola, Santa Clara maintained control throughout the contest.

Biola continued its string of high-level opponents by taking on its second-straight ranked opponent. Saturday's contest was the team's ninth ranked matchup of 2024.

Santa Clara wasted no time, scoring five goals in the first quarter while limiting Biola to just one. Biola managed to fight back in the second quarter with goals from Ryle Hibbard and Gavin McKenzie, but the Broncos only pushed the pace with a strong attack.

Four minutes into the third quarter and BU faced its biggest deficit. A 12-3 scoreboard favored Santa Clara but BU was not done fighting.

Biola showed resilience in the fourth quarter, scoring four goals, including two from Nolan Rapp. Caleb Hernandez began the fourth quarter with a spark, grabbing the opening sprint. Braeden Marsolini and John Grasso closed out the game with goals to put the final score to 14-8.

John Grasso stood out with three goals, while Nolan Rapp added two goals in the fourth quarter to give Biola a fighting chance. Braeden Marsolini and Gavin McKenzie also contributed with key goals.

The Eagles will wrap up Saturday with a scrimmage against Cuesta College at 4:30 pm.
