Strong Start, Tough Finish

The Biola men’s soccer team had a strong start, but a tough finish in their 3-1 loss to Cal State San Marcos.

SAN MARCOS, Calif.---The Biola men's soccer team had a strong start, but a tough finish in their 3-1 loss to Cal State San Marcos.

Biola (0-2-1 overall) made a statement early on, scoring a goal in just the 8th minute against CSUSM (2-0-0). Justin Eisenmann earned his first Biola goal with Nathan Kovalcik supplying the assist which was the second of his career.

Seventeen minutes later, the Cougars tied up the match (1-1) and neither team would score again until the second half. 

CSU San Marcos secured the go-ahead goal in the 50th minute. Caleb Castaño was almost able to tie it up 22 seconds later, but his shot was saved by the Cougars' goalkeeper.

CSUSM furthered their lead to 3-1 in the 79th minute with a penalty kick goal.

Biola pushed forward, but struggled to find another scoring opportunity against the Cougars defensive line. Dylan Memory fired in the Eagles' final shot in the 88th minute, but it was also saved by the Cougars' keeper. 

Gijs van Schouten and Nicholas Daniel shared time in Biola's goal. Van Schouten played 82 minutes for the Eagles where he faced 14 shots and made four saves. Daniel subbed in with eight minutes remaining and faced one shot that he saved in the 87th minute.

Biola will regroup and prepare for their next match on Saturday, Sep. 9 at 7 p.m. The Eagles will face the United Soccer Coaches' nationally-ranked No. 4 CSU Los Angeles at Al Barbour Field.
