Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Warriors Strike Gold Early

Westmont uses the energy from an early individual score to storm to a 4-0 victory.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — For the first time since 2016 Biola Men's Soccer had a conference match against old rivals Westmont as the Eagles hosted the Warriors Saturday night. This time around, the ball bounced in favor of the visiting team as Westmont's swift ball movement and flashy individual play led them to a 4-0 victory over the BUMS.

Westmont piled on 19 total shots and was very accurate throughout, directing 11 of their attempts on the frame of the goal. Gijs Van Schouten did all he could, racking up seven saves, but he was left open 1-on-1 against a group of Warriors' multiple times throughout the evening.

The visitors scored twice in the first half and again two times in the second half, with the last goal coming while Biola was left to play a man down after a red card issued for a tackle to stop an "obvious goal-scoring opportunity."

The Eagles had a few chances scattered throughout the contest, getting six shots in the first half and nine in the second half, but the offense always seemed to be just a step behind the Westmont defense and midfield. There was one serious look at goal that came from Ethan Hardin, but outside of that the Warriors managed to control the flow of the game.

Westmont grabbed control of the contest in the 13th minute as Leonel Olivio Ortiz channeled his inner Lionel Messi and sliced his way around three Biola defenders to bury a laser in the back of the net and put his team out front. Olivo Ortiz would score again in the 56th minute to put his team out ahead 3-0 and really change the tone of the contest. These scores were the first in the collegiate career of the Santa Barbara native.

The victory was Westmont's first of the season and allows them to begin their PacWest era in the win column. For Head Coach Joey O'Keefe's bunch, this brings their record to a level 1-1 and will be one to push back in the rearview mirror as they move along the early part of their conference schedule.

Up next for BU is a home contest against Point Loma on October 7 at 7 p.m.
