Biola Comeback

The men’s soccer team came back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Point Loma 4-3.

LA MIRADA---The Biola men's soccer team came back from behind to defeat Point Loma 4-3 at Al Barbour Field.

"We made some minor tactical changes, but I think the difference was that we didn't stop believing in ourselves," explained head coach Joey O'Keefe. "When they scored the first goal in the second half, it was then 3-0, everyone came to the sideline and we had one final pow wow where the guys were screaming and yelling that we could do this. That belief is what carried us in this game and I am really proud of how our team kept fighting."

The Sea Lions (6-4 overall, 2-1-0 PacWest Conference) scored two unmatched goals in the first half and then extended their lead to 3-0 with another goal in the 51st minute.

The Eagles (4-5-2, 2-1-0 PacWest), facing a 3-0 deficit, kept their composure and would continue to completely turn the game around.

A little over two minutes after the Sea Lions third goal, Biola would begin to chip away at their lead. Luca McGreevey Couchman scored BU's first goal in the 53rd minute with an assist from Ethan Hardin

And then in the 69th minute, Biola would score again. Dylan Memory received a good ball from Justin Eisenmann and would continue to score the Eagles' second goal of the game which was Memory's first of the season (3-2).

Just a minute later Hardin would score the game-tying goal, completely changing the game's pace. Jeremy Larson found Hardin in the box who knocked in the Eagles' third goal which knotted the score with a little under 20 minutes remaining (3-3).

Both teams battled to gain the advantage, but would be denied by the opposing team's defense. PLNU's Tanner Wrzeski made two saves in the goal and Aidan Burns made four for the Eagles in the nailbiter.

However, BU was able to break through in the 89th minute. Eisenmann fired in a shot that was saved by the Sea Lions' keeper and was deflected to a perfectly positioned Hardin who quickly fired in the game-winning goal (4-3).

"It's just an amazing experience to come from three goals behind and just battle to the end," reflected Hardin. "We never stopped believing that we could get the dub. We fought together and came up with the victory."

"Ethan comes through big for us often," O'Keefe stated. "Tonight when we needed him to come through on a big stage, he didn't shy away. He stepped up as a captain, put the game on his shoulders and made a big difference for us."

The Eagles play next on Monday, Oct. 16 at 3:30 p.m. PT against Hawai'i Hilo at the Vulcan Soccer Field.
