Reverse Sweep Win Opens 2023

BU battled back from a 2-0 deficit to take down CSUSM in a five-set thriller in its season opener.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- Biola (1-0) opened up the 2023 campaign with an exhilarating comeback victory. The team's kickoff match at Cal State San Marcos (0-1) began the Seaside Invitational for the Eagles, as they reverse swept the Cougars.

The match started with the Cougars gaining an edge. Set one went to the hosting Cougars in a 25-20 fashion, thanks to a .300 hitting percentage for CSUSM.

The next set saw a small step up for the Eagles with a 25-22 finish in favor of Cal State San Marcos. BU had much better control in the second set, boasting multiple four-point leads during the game. A 22-20 lead for the Eagles disappeared quickly though, as the Cougars stole the set with five-straight points.

The Eagles did not let the end of set two keep them down. An early seven point run for Biola gave them an advantage in set three that would hold through for a 25-19 set victory. Abigail Copeland led the charge, taking part in three-consecutive blocks including one solo block and two helped by Emily Smith and Abby Brewster. Hannah Hanson played her part with three service aces in the set.

All the momentum remained on the side of the Eagles, as the match shifted into the last set to 25. Biola never let up the gas, boosting forward for a 25-13 win with 18 kills as a team and a .405 hitting percentage.

The fifth set would decide the match and the Cougars pounced early. CSUSM claimed the first three points of the set, setting the Eagles back with the goal of being the first team to 15. BU fought back with back-to-back blocks, before an attack error and service ace put the Eagles back in control. The BU squad saw its biggest lead in the set after three kills from Emily Smith built a 13-9 advantage for the visitors. Smith added one more to bring the team to 14 points and an attack error from CSUSM ended the contest, giving the Eagles a 3-2 win.

Smith brought the fire power in the crucial moments for BU, delivering 10 kills despite not seeing the floor until set number three. The veteran put her skills on display with five kills in the fourth game and four in the fifth, while offering up a .333 hitting percentage on the day.

Abby Brewster and Meredith Fisher also both surpassed double-digit kills on Friday. Brewster combined 13 kills with 24 assists, while splitting time as the setter with Hannah Hanson. Nine digs from Brewster put her one shy of a triple-double, while also adding two solo blocks and three block assists.

Newcomers, Fisher, Hanson, and Juliana Van Ommering shined in their first action in a BU uniform. 12 kills with a .429 hitting percentage came through from the graduate transfer, Fisher. Freshman Hanson was stout in her collegiate debut with a team-high 25 assists and five aces. The young talent also picked up 10 digs for a double-double in the season opener.

Another surge came in the form of Dominique Kirton. The senior entered in the third set and quickly made her presence felt with four kills. Between the third and fourth sets, Kirton nabbed seven kills from the outside hitter spot.

Biola will continue in the Seaside Invitational on Saturday, facing Seattle Pacific at 9:00 am and Lewis at 4:30 pm at Point Loma in San Diego.
