June 02, 2023

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. --- The 2023 season was magnificent for Biola Women's Water Polo. The fruits of the excellent campaign continued to sprout with the announcement of the ACWPC All-American awards. Five Eagles were honored on the prestigious list to go along with the coach of the year, Sarah Orozco.

Orozco and the Eagles made history in the second year of the program's existence. The most recent campaign saw the team reach the NCAA Championships and take down DI Long Island University in the opening round.

Under Orozco's leadership the team accomplished many new feats including a WWPA Championship, automatic bid to nationals, win at nationals, and 18 overall wins. The overwhelming success helped the leader of the program grab the top honor as the ACWPC DII Coach of the Year. The second year head coach added to her collection of accolades from the season with a WWPA Co-Head Coach of the Year award earlier this summer.

For the BU players, a pair of Eagles grabbed First Team All-American honors, including Veralie Naranjo and Rachel Spadt. The duo dominated near the goal, shining on the defense and offense for Biola. Naranjo pulled in 66 goals with 15 assists and a team-high 43 drawn exclusions. She also added 14 steals and a field block. Spadt tallied 29 steals and five field blocks, while offering 43 goals and a .483 shot percentage. She totaled 66 points in 2023 with 23 assists.

Three more Eagles were named to the Honorable Mention All-American Team. The group included two field players in Maria Roldan Gonzalez and Kourtney Pyle and the BU keeper in Samantha Rainey. Pyle was the top goal scorer in the WWPA conference with 79 tallies in 2023. Roldan Gonzalez led the way in takeaways with an astounding 58 steals for BU. In goal, Rainey grabbed 110 saves and five steals with over 460 minutes played.
