May 09, 2023

IRVINE, Calif. --- The all-conference awards were announced on Tuesday evening for the 2023 baseball season. Biola put a player on all three teams, totaling six All-PacWest awards as a team.

The BU squad went 19-27 in 2023 under first year head coach Jesse Rodgers. Biola was one game away from making the PacWest Tournament, earning 13 conference wins.

AJ Ortiz led the way for the Eagles with a First Team All-PacWest distinction. The third baseman was elite in the BU lineup, starting in every game in 2023. Ortiz brought the power to rank third in the conference and 58th in the nation with 13 home runs. His best stretch came in a four-game series against APU, in which he tallied five homers while homering in all four games.

Throughout the campaign, Ortiz gathered 18 multi-hit and nine multi-RBI outings at the plate. He also contributed 24 extra-base hits, including 11 doubles.

Three Eagles followed Ortiz and took a spot on the All-PacWest Second Team, including Taylor Justus, Bobby Brown and Oscar Serratos.

Brown picked up speed throughout the season, finding his groove on the mound. The righty hurler closed out the year as a regular starter, scoring three wins in eight starts. The sophomore never allowed more than four runs in any appearance, while posting a 3.21 earned-run average in 2023. He ended the season with an exclamation point, going eight innings, while only allowing one run and three hits in a winning effort. Brown also posted a career-high and a team-high for the season with nine strikeouts in his last outing.

The second team catcher was Justus, after a season with 37 starts and a .286 batting average. Justus tallied 12 extra-base hits, while slugging .406 in 2023. He also landed multiple hits in 11 games, including a 4-5 showing in the season opener. During the year, Justus put together a seven-game hitting streak.

Serratos ranked amongst the second team outfielders in his final season in La Mirada. The graduate raked in 11 home runs in just 25 games to rank fourth in the PacWest. The hits just kept coming for Serratos, who ended the year with a .395 batting average and a .519 on-base percentage. He nearly hit for the cycle for the second time in his career, going for a double, triple and two home runs in a single game.

Another power hitter shined for BU in Wyatt Duncan, earning a spot on the All-PacWest Third Team. The junior was the power in the lineup with 15 home runs to rank second in the conference and 33rd in the nation. He averaged .281, while slugging .626 and tallied 14 multi-hit games and 10 games with multiple RBIs. Duncan added a 10 game hitting streak in 2023, which was the highest on the team, and went 18-straight games reaching base.

As a designated hitter, Sam Lisiak pulled in a Third Team All-PacWest honor in his first year on the field. He started 33 games and hit .293 with five homers and 19 RBI. Lisiak grabbed nine multi-hit games and five multi-RBI outings. He also homered in back-to-back games on February 24 and won the PacWest Player of the Week award.
