What a Year

Biola saw its magical run come to end in the first round of the National Collegiate Women’s Water Polo Championships.

May 12, 2023

Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. --- The Biola Women's Water Polo team made history in 2023. The second year program won the WWPA Championship, earned an automatic berth in the NCAA National Tournament, and secured a win in the opening round of their first nationals appearance. The team advanced to play the top-seeded Stanford Cardinals on Friday and fell to end their incredible run.

"I'm proud of these girls," commented head coach Sarah Orozco emphatically. "They have a fighting spirit and we want to exude that fight and resilience wherever we can: emotionally, spiritually and physically."

Entering Friday, the Eagles held onto a six-game winning streak, dating back to the regular season. Just two days prior, Biola took down LIU to reach the quarterfinals in the national tournament.

The Eagles met their match in the defending champions Stanford Cardinals. The top seeded NCAA Division I Cardinals were in control of the game from the start. Stanford recorded a shutout for the first time in seven seasons, taking the 23-0 victory over BU.

BU fought through and found 25 shots and nine power plays but could not break through for a goal. Samantha Rainey and Damaris Kientz combined for seven saves through 32 minutes of action.

Biola finished off an incredible season with an 18-15 overall record to go along with a conference crown and nationals appearance to make program history.

"Accomplishing their water polo career goals this year has allowed them this amazing opportunity that only few teams receive each year to perform on the biggest stage of NCAA Water Polo," said Orozco. "We will continue to work for more opportunities like this in the near future."
