Eagles Fall to the West Region's No. 1 Seed

The softball team lost to the West Region’s No. 1 seed, CUI, in the opening round of the NCAA DII West Regional.

IRVINE, Calif.---The Biola softball team lost 4-0 to the West Region's No. 1 seeded team, Concordia, in the opening round of the NCAA Division II West Regional.

Concordia's pitcher, Daniela Alvarez, was lights out against Biola. The PacWest's Newcomer of the Year pitched a two-hitter shutout against the Eagles. Allie Beck and Rilee Ruvalcaba recorded hits for BU. Beck had a single in the top of the fourth and Ruvalcaba doubled in the seventh.

CUI capitalized on some Eagle errors and wild pitches to score a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

"We knew it was going to be a fight coming in," commented head coach Kristin Halte. "We've seen Concordia multiple times this season and we know each other well. At the end of the day we made a couple more mistakes that cost us runs. Credit to Concordia and their pitching staff, they did a great job in keeping us off-balanced."

The Eagles play again tomorrow Friday, May 12 at 1:30 p.m. against CSU San Bernardino in the loser's bracket. The winner will stay alive in the tournament and play again at 4 p.m. against the loser of the Concordia and Northwest Nazarene game.

Biola and CSU San Bernardino faced one another twice this season where Biola won the first game of the doubleheader 3-1 and lost the second 7-6.

"At this point, it's going to be tough no matter who you play," stated Halte. "It's not over until it's over. We still have tomorrow to keep fighting and we have our faith. This team does well when our backs are against the wall and I am excited for another opportunity tomorrow for us to compete."

Halte concluded, "I'm really proud of my team and the fight they showed today. I know they wanted it, but just didn't get it done today."
