Pitch Perfect

Biola pitching was stout throughout Friday’s doubleheader, leading to a clean sweep on the day.

LA MIRADA --- BU baseball got the job done on Friday, sweeping the Hawks with a 4-0 game two victory. The team shutout was led by Lucas Bixby who tossed five innings, before Jake Anderson capped the game with two of his own.

The win moved the team to 19-25 on the season with a 13-13 mark in the PacWest. For the moment, the Eagles have moved into fourth place in the PacWest standings but will need two more wins on Saturday to secure that spot in the PacWest Championships.

"Our pitchers were lights out all day!" commented head coach Jesse Rodgers. "I'm really happy for this group that we get to play meaningful games on our last day of the regular season."

Two games on Friday combined for 16 innings in the doubleheader. Through those innings, Biola pitching allowed one run and six hits for a combined earned-run average of 0.56.

Bixby did his part with a stellar start in game two. The sophomore retired the first eight batters he faced, while maintaining a no-hitter through four frames.

Errors aided a Holy Names attack in the fifth, placing runners on first and third with no outs. Bixby responded with three-consecutive outs to finish five innings with no runs allowed. In his winning outing, Bixby collected six strikeouts with one hit given up.

Anderson completed the shutout for Biola with the final six outs. The righty went three-up, three-down in the sixth but faced a bases loaded jam in the seventh and final frame. A hit-by-pitch and two singles brought the tying run to the plate with no outs on the board. A mound visit refocused the squad and a strikeout followed. Next up came a game-ending double play to complete the shutout.

On the offensive side of the diamond, the Eagles gained an advantage with the long ball. Just like game one, two batters was all it took for the Eagles to score but this time it was a two-run homer by Gavin Ayers to put Biola on the scoreboard.

Ayers scored again in the third with the help of a Wyatt Duncan home run. The first baseman went yard for the 15th time this season, giving the Eagles a 4-0 lead that would stick through the final out.

Duncan logged two hits in game two, recording his 14th multi-hit game of the season. Noah Ruiz also went for multiple hits, going 2-3 from the No. 5 spot in the lineup.

Biola will celebrate senior day on Saturday before its final doubleheader of the regular season against Holy Names at 12:00 pm.
