Eagles Unable To Extend Winning Streak

The Eagles got an early lead in game one on Saturday, but watched that lead slip away in the ninth inning resulting in a 5-7 loss against the Hawks.

LA MIRADA --- Biola began the day with a pregame ceremony celebrating the 2023 seniors before taking the field for an important game three of four at Eagles Diamond. The Eagles (19-26, 13-14 PacWest) took the first two games of the series on Friday, but unfortunately they were unable to hang onto their streak against the Hawks (24-23, 14-17 PacWest) in game one on Saturday.

The very important game for the Eagles started off slow as two scoreless innings went by for both teams, but Biola got things going in the third inning.

One of Biola's most favored seniors, Oscar Serratos, did what he does best hit a lead-off home run to get BU on the board first. The Eagles followed up the solo shot with a single and two walks to load the bases for Noah Ruiz. Ruiz was dealt a four-pitch walk to extend BU's lead. Biola brought another run across the board to take a 3-0 lead at the end of the third inning.

Andrew Beauvais got the start on the mound on his senior day and pitched four scoreless innings to keep HNU's offense quiet.

The Hawks headed into the fifth inning trailing by three before their offense woke up. Two singles and a triple was enough to get two runs on the board for Holy Names.

The Eagles headed into the bottom of the seventh inning with a one-run lead, but with playoffs on the line, they needed some insurance runs. With two outs, Wyatt Duncan came up to the plate and hit a single to get on base for AJ Ortiz. Ortiz gave the Eagles the insurance runs that they needed as he sent a ball over the center field fence for his 12th home run of the season. BU held a comfortable 5-2 lead after seven frames.

Eagles pitching held the Hawks scoreless for another three innings, but it all came down to what would happen in the final inning of the game.

Holy Names, down by three in the ninth inning, got a rally started after their lead-off batter got hit by a pitch. Back-to-back singles loaded the bases for the Hawks with no outs. A walk brought in another run which was followed by the third single of the inning to bring in another two runs. After tying the game, the Hawks were not done yet, they received another walk which loaded the bases again. HNU was productive with two outs as they brought another two runs across the plate to take a 7-5 lead before the bottom of the ninth.

While the whole game was crucial to the Eagles, the bottom of the ninth inning became the most crucial point, but unfortunately the Eagles could not find a way to come out on top.

Beauvais looked stellar in his senior day start as he pitched 5.1 innings, giving up only two runs and recording a season-best six strikeouts. His fellow senior, Serratos found a way to stand out as he went yard for the 10th time this season.

The Eagles will play the final game of the regular season around 4:00 pm. If the Eagles win, they clinch a playoff spot, so make sure to tune in and follow along.
