Five Eagles Pull Postseason Honors

Biola women’s water polo players created a splash in the 2023 season, earning multiple postseason All-WWPA awards.

April 27, 2023

VISTA, Calif --- The Western Water Polo Association released its all-conference awards, following a vote from the coaches around the league. Biola placed at least one athlete on each team, including Rachel Spadt on the first team, Veralie Naranjo and Maria Roldan Gonzalez on the second team, Kourtney Pyle as an honorable mention and Mia Mulhall on the all-freshman team.

Biola made a statement in 2023, finding success in its second season as an official athletics program. The team went even in its overall record at 14-14 but took care of business in conference play with a 5-1 WWPA mark.

The strong play in WWPA action helped the Eagles to the top seed in the western side of the conference with the postseason tournament around the corner.

Spadt played an important role for the BU squad as a utility player on her way to the All-WWPA First Team selection. The redshirt junior started all 28 games, while compiling 79 shots and 42 goals. Spadt ranked favorably amongst the conference players, rating eighth in goals and seventh in overall points with 60. No one ranked higher on the team than Spadt in shot percentage, who scored on 53.2 percent of the shots she attempted.

On the other side of the pool, Spadt contributed with 23 steals and five field blocks. She also tallied 11 drawn exclusions during the season. Spadt found her groove late in the year, scoring in the final seven games, including a season-best of five goals against CSU East Bay on March 17.

Roldan Gonzalez earned her All-WWPA Second Team distinction as an all-around talent. The junior ranked in the top 10 in the WWPA for goals, assists, points, and steals. The junior led the conference in both assists with 24 and steals with 48.

The utility player scored in 23-of-28 games this season, finishing the year with 47. Seven times in 2023, Roldan Gonzalez reached three goals.

Another Second Team All-WWPA recognition came in for Naranjo. She was a force near the goal that gave defenses fits all year. Through the season, Naranjo posted 59 goals and 73 points to rank third in the WWPA. Opportunities continually develop through Naranjo's offense, as she drew 38 exclusions in 2023.

Naranjo was a powerhouse scoring goals, collecting three games with at least six scores. On March 3, seven goals came through for Naranjo, as she tacked on a season-best total against Westcliff.

The WWPA goal leader was Pyle at 71 goals in 2023, helping her to an All-WWPA Honorable Mention. Pyle scored in 23-straight games, while tallying multiple goals in 21 contests. The senior also showed off her speed with 36 sprint wins, which ranked second in the conference.

Mia Mulhall added to the team's accolades with a All-WWPA Freshman Team appearance. The young talent recorded four goals on seven shots in her rookie campaign. Mulhall also added to the defense with six steals and one field block.

BU will kick off the WWPA Tournament on Friday out in O'Fallon, Illinois in a matchup against Gannon at 12:15pm PDT.
