Eagles Record Narrow Loss to #19 CSUSM

The softball team forced nationally-ranked No. 19 CSUSM into extra innings but were unable to surpass the Cougars in a 4-3 loss.

LA MIRADA---The Biola Softball team forced nationally-ranked No. 19 Cal State San Marcos into extra innings but was unable to surpass the Cougars who won 4-3 in the ninth inning.

CSUSM took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning that the Eagles duplicated in the sixth.

Colby McClinton reached first off a third-baseman error and advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt by Abie Nowak. Rilee Ruvalcaba stepped up with a huge leftcenter double that scored BU's tying run, 1-1.

With two outs, Kaitlyn Hawkins singled to center field and scored the leading run, 2-1.

San Marcos came back in the top of the sixth with a two-run inning of their own. The Cougars scored two runs off of three hits which put them ahead 3-2.

Biola buckled down and scored the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh to force the Cougars into extra innings.

With one out in the inning, Alexis Lara gave the Eagles a baserunner where she benefited off a Cougar error that got her to second base. Jennifer Morinishi then pushed her over to third with a situational grounder to the second baseman. Colby McClinton clutched up with a triple to the left field fence which scored the game-extending third run, 3-3.

The eighth inning resulted in zeros for both teams and the Cougars broke the standstill in the ninth.

CSUSM got a runner on first courtesy of an Eagle error, but Biola would come back with back-to-back outs. However, the Cougars next batter executed a deep single to left field that scored the game-winning run, 4-3.

Biola was unable to answer Cal State San Marcos' run in the bottom of the ninth which resulted in the Cougars 4-3 win.

Raylene Roybal started the game and pitched until the seventh inning where she was relieved by Kayla Bousquette who closed the game out for the Eagles.

The Eagles and Cougars are playing in the second game of the doubleheader, right now, at Freedom Field.
