Quick Start Leads CSUSM To Sweep

Biola gets a few multi-hit efforts, but struggles in the middle of the order in 3-1 loss.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Single runs in both the top of the first and top of the second were enough to secure a sweep for visiting No. 19 CSU San Marcos on Saturday at Freedom Field. The Cougars tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh to walk away with the 3-1 victory.

Alexis Lara, Raylene Roybal and Hailey Paull each had a pair of hits in the contest for Biola, but the Eagles had a tough time manufacturing runs against the CSUSM ace who notched her 10th win of the season.

The first four batters of the bottom of the fifth inning each reached base for Biola as they looked to answer back from down 2-0. Roybal, who pitched 10 complete innings on the day, laced a single into the outfield to lead off the fifth, but was caught trying to stretch it to a double for an immediate out.

After that, BU used a walk from Bridgette Trujillo and then back-to-back singles from Paull and Lara to load the bases with one away. A full count, two-out walk from Colby McClinton pushed Trujillo home but Biola could only half the deficit despite the inning's hot start. It was CSUSM reliever Jayline Sloss who entered the game and managed to limit the damage.

She also held Biola off the board in the sixth and faced the minimum number of batters in the seventh to halt Biola's hopes of stopping its recent skid.

Biola continues to lead the conference in batting average (.305) and maintained its team ERA today (2.67), which is already second-best in the league. Those numbers continue to give hope of brighter days ahead for a team that's in the midst of a really rough stretch against top-level competition.

The Eagles (17-16) will have a prime chance to turn around their favor next Saturday as they head south to take on bitter rival No. 9 Concordia University Irvine (29-7).
