Eagles Force Sea Lions Into Overtime

The women’s basketball team came back from behind to force Point Loma into overtime but would eventually lose 67-61 to the Sea Lions in the PacWest Championships.

HONOLULU, Hawai'i--- The Biola women's basketball team took Point Loma into overtime, but despite a great effort would fall short 67-61 to PLNU in the PacWest Championships.

Fourth-seed Biola and fifth-seed Point Loma battled through the first and second quarters.

The lead changed three times between BU and PLNU in the opening quarter. Point Loma began ahead by landing the first basket and Biola would work back to take a quick lead before the Sea Lions would regain the edge. PLNU would stretch their lead to as much as six points before BU would begin chipping away. The Eagles managed to tie up the match in the last 27 seconds thanks to a layup by Natasa Radovic (13-13).

The second quarter was another competitive frame where the Eagles and Sea Lions were neck-and-neck. Point Loma slightly outscored Biola 12-11 which would allow them to lead by one point (25-24) heading into the break.

The third quarter was favorable to Point Loma who scored 21 points to Biola's 11 headed out of halftime. This translated to a 46-35 lead for PLNU entering the fourth quarter.

Biola had some work to do in the fourth and stepped up to the challenge, going on to outscore Point Loma 24-13 and force overtime.

In the fourth's opening minutes, Radovic downed four baskets which put Biola within a four-point reach, 46-42. Radovic was red-hot, downing two free throws, a jumper, and a beyond-the-arc shot in the span of three minutes.

Point Loma would break up the Eagles scoring and the two teams would trade baskets until BU went on a run with four minutes left on the clock. Jaci Bolden had a jump shot, Eleni Cabrera landed a layup and then Bolden would make two free throws to tie up the game, 53-53.

PLNU would take the lead back on the next possession, 55-53, but BU would tie up the game again courtesy of two good free throws by Bolden (55-55).

Five fruitless possessions later, Laila Walker ended up at the charity stripe and downed two free throws, giving Biola their first lead of the fourth, 57-55 with 35 seconds remaining.

A PLNU timeout gave the Sea Lions enough time to regroup and come back with the game-tying layup, 57-57.

Jessa Thurman answered back on the next possession with a basket in the paint, but Point Loma would utilize another team timeout to map out a plan that would allow them to score with three-seconds remaining on the clock and tie up the game (59-59), which sent the two teams into overtime.

Maya Whiteside achieved the first overtime-basket, putting Biola ahead 61-59 but Point Loma put away the next four, resulting in their 67-61 victory at the McCabe Gymnasium.

Radovic led the Eagles' scoring effort with 14 points. She was followed by Walker with 10 points and Sydney Moran with eight points.

The Eagles were nearly perfect at the free throw line, landing 14 of 16 attempts as a team. Bolden was an excellent 4-for-4 and Whiteside, Walker and Radovic were all a perfect 2-for-2.

This game closes out the season for Biola who will end the year fifth place in the PacWest Conference.
