Eagles Drop Match to Cougars

The men’s tennis team lost 5-2 to ITA’s nationally-ranked No. 18 Azusa Pacific at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex. Prokopchuk and Cordova recorded singles wins on courts 1 and 6.

AZUSA, Calif.--- The Biola men's tennis team lost 5-2 to nationally-ranked No. 18 Azusa Pacific at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex.

Biola got off to an optimistic start when they won the first set of doubles on the second court. Sebastian Herrera and Callen Hein took down APU's Elias Emilio Walter and Miha Velicki 6-1, but domino 6-4 losses on courts 1 and 3 would result in APU securing the doubles point and getting a 1-0 head start.

And then consecutive victories on courts 3, 4, and 2 gave APU a 4-0 lead and clinched their team win.

But Biola would continue to battle and receive their first win from Alexey Prokopchuk.

Prokopchuck, nationally-ranked No. 19, squared off against nationally-ranked No. 12 Leyton Bohren (APU) on the first court in what would be an exciting duel. Prokopchuk led 7-6 in the first set and went on to win the first set tiebreak 8-6. Prokopchuk used that momentum to win the second set 6-3.

Courts 5 and 6 were also tightly fought, going three sets deep. Alex Sedeno won his first set 6-2 and then lost his last two 6-0, 6-3 to APU's Brody Bohren on the fifth court.

Biola recorded their last win of the match on the sixth court courtesy of Isaac Cordova. Cordova beat APU's Vili Bonev in the first set and then lost the second, which forced a 10-point tiebreak that Cordova won 10-7.

BU dropped 3-3 overall while APU improved 6-2. The Eagles will regroup and play again tomorrow Friday, Mar. 3 at 2 p.m. against Colorado Mesa.
