BU Unable To Get It Done

Biola was unable to drive in runs in a 7-1 loss to the Vulcans at Francis Wong Stadium.

HILO, Hawai'i --- The Eagles (4-13, 0-5 PacWest) were hoping to see a win at the end of what was supposed to be game one against the Vulcans (11-2, 4-1 PacWest), but things did not fall in the favor of BU's hands. Rain rolled in which led to a rain delay and canceled games to follow.

Biola started with a quick unsuccessful top of the first inning, but the Eagles were ready to move on and get things done in the innings to come. After the Vulcans put up a zero in the bottom of the first inning, BU got a small rally going to start off the second, but it was not enough to get on the board. One more scoreless inning for the Eagles and they were ready to go.

BU headed into the top of the fourth inning with zeroes on both sides and they were looking to score first. Taylor Justus got a two-out rally started with a single, followed by a walk to Bobby Brown. Noah Ruiz came up to the plate with two runners on base and smacked a single down the middle to bring a run across the plate. The Eagles then continued their rally and loaded the bases, but they were not able to extend their 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Lucas Bixby went out to the mound for his fifth start of the season. He started off the game pitching three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and picking up three strikeouts.

The Vulcans were quick to answer back to the Eagles' half of the fourth inning. UHH got things started with a double down the right field line which was followed by a sacrifice flyout to bring in a run and tie the game at one.

UHH seemed to have found their rhythm and continued to bring in runs. The Vulcans tallied a total of five runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 6-1 lead over the Eagles.

The Eagles were hoping to stay in the game and score more runs, but just could not find the right pitches leaving them scoreless for the final five innings.

Gray clouds began to roll in around the bottom of the eighth inning and the Vulcans were able to get a runner in scoring position before the game entered a rain delay. The game resumed and UHH brought in that base runner to add an extra insurance run for a 7-1 lead.

After a bit of bad weather, the Eagles had hoped a little break would help, but unfortunately they had another scoreless inning which resulted in a 7-1 loss to PacWest opponents, Hawai'i Hilo.

Lucas Bixby pitched six innings, giving up four hits and three runs. Bixby recorded a season-best, seven strikeouts against the Vulcans. Relief pitchers, Gilbert Lopez and Chris McClean each pitched an inning in an attempt to try and make a late Eagles comeback.

The Eagles and Vulcans were scheduled to face off for game two of the double header at 8:00 pm P.T. on Thursday, but due to inclement weather, game two was canceled. The Eagles will head back home after a rough trip to the islands and play at Cal Poly Pomona at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, March 7.
