BU Beats Nationally Ranked CPP

Biola showed its potential in an impressive showing on the road at Cal Poly Pomona.

POMONA, Calif. --- Tuesday's evening contest at Cal Poly Pomona (10-4) was in Biola's control throughout. The Eagles (5-13) came to play and took down the nationally ranked Broncos, 11-3.

The two teams traded road victories, as CPP took the first game of the series in La Mirada before BU returned the favor on Tuesday. Entering the day, Cal Poly Pomona ranked 15th in the nation in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll and 25th in the Collegiate Baseball Poll.

The Biola bats got the job done in the opening frame. The first four batters all reached base, including a double from the number three and number four hitters in the lineup. Oscar Serratos put in play the cleanup double, plating Wyatt Duncan and AJ Ortiz for the early lead. A wild pitch moved Serratos to third, setting up an RBI groundout for Sam Lisiak.

The pitching rotation showed up next with four blanks on the scoreboard. Brandon McClean earned the start and posted two scoreless frames, allowing just one hit. He also tacked on two strikeouts, before Andrew Zittel took over and logged two perfect innings on the mound.

Once again, BU got the offense going with four-straight Eagles reaching base but this time it came in the top of the fourth. Taylor Justus, James Whitman, and Tyler White loaded the bases for Jonathan Smith in the nine-spot. Smith delivered with no outs, sending the ball down the left field line for a two-run double.

Bobby Brown added to the frame with an RBI groundout in similar fashion to Lisiak in the first. The rally would not end there, as Ortiz logged a single to center, helping Smith advance to third. Duncan came next and brought home Smith with another BU single. Two more singles followed from Serratos and Lisiak, as Biola nabbed a five-run inning and an 8-0 lead.

CPP pushed back in the fifth and sixth frames but never threatened the Biola lead. The Broncos only grabbed three runs between the two innings but could only cut their deficit to six.

Insurance runs for BU came in with the help of Broncos mishaps in the field. Biola added two runs in the sixth with two CPP errors and a hit by pitch.

The final run for the Eagles was a solo show from Duncan. For the seventh time this season, the junior left the yard with a home run. The long ball gave BU a 11-3 lead that would stick through the final out.

The Biola lineup was lethal on Tuesday. All nine hitters logged a hit on the day with three extra-base hits. The team recorded 14 hits for a .318 batting average in the contest.

Young talent held on to the lead on the mound in the form of Gabe Magallan and Blake Wentz. The pair of freshmen notched a scoreless frame each, while Wentz struck out all three batters faced. Caleb Bennett logged the ninth and capped off the game for BU.

Biola will return to conference play on Thursday, taking on Fresno Pacific at home beginning at 11:00 am.
