Win The Day!

Biola Women's Water Polo picks up its first win over CUI to highlight strong day.

February 25, 2023

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WHITTIER, Calif. — Biola Women's Water Polo picked up two more victories on a gloomy Saturday afternoon in Whitter to inch their way closer to the .500 mark on this young season.

Head Coach Sarah Orozco's team once again dug-deep to find a very late go-ahead goal from Kourtney Pyle to pick up a one-score victory over a big rival in game one, and then the Eagles used a strong scoring effort in the second half to lock up another win in Saturday's game two.

Biola - 11; Concordia University Irvine - 10 (Game 1)
Biola scored three times in the first period and then three more in the second as the two teams combined for 12 goals to sit tied through 16 minutes of play.

The Eagles earned a narrow lead with their play in the third period, out-scoring the Golden Eagles 4-3 to surge ahead 10-9.

CUI managed to score first in the fourth period though to tie the game right back up as minutes began to fade off the game clock. With just under three minutes left to play, Biola managed to serve the ball to Kourtney Pyle at the four spot.

Pyle walked it forward just a bit and then released a gutsy lob shot toward the back post. Her shot carried over the outstretched arms of two CUI defenders around the 2-meter spot and had the goalkeeper beat by a mile.

That would turn out to be the difference in this one as neither team scored again once Pyle converted for what was her team-high fourth goal of the game.

Pyle was one of three Eagles with multiple goals in the opening game. Rachel Spadt and Marija Mijuskovic also had a pair.

Biola - 16; Whittier College - 11 (Game 2)
Just a few short hours after their thrilling game one, Biola had the opportunity to play the hosting school, the Whittier Poets.

Whittier came into this one the number five ranked team in NCAA Division III. The Poets were able to keep things close with Biola for quite some time before ultimately the Biola offense proved to be too much.

Biola had just a one goal lead at the half, but BU utilized a massive third period to pull away. The Eagles out-scored the Poets 6-1 in the third frame to charge out ahead to a 12-6 advantage.

Whittier piled on a bit in the fourth to make it closer, even pulling within three goals at one point, but Biola would finish up with the comfortable margin at 16-11.

Veralie Naranjo had a monster game for BU in the nightcap, tallying five goals to go with a pair of assists.Spadt, Pyle and Maria Roldan Gonzalez got in on the fun with two goals a piece as well.

The two wins today help Biola improve to 6-9 overall this year. They're now 2-0 vs. Whittier College this season and the win over Concordia is the first in program history, avenging a 15-9 loss to CUI from last year.

Biola keeps it local next weekend as they compete in the annual Claremont Convergence Tournament, which is co-hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne. The Eagles' first matchup next week is with Grove City College at 10 a.m. Friday. The game is in La Verne at Las Flores Park.
