A Fighting Victory

The Eagles erased an 18-point second half deficit to earn the win over Academy of Art.

LA MIRADA --- Biola men's basketball (5-4, 2-1 PacWest) protected its home court on Saturday night against the visiting Academy of Art Urban Knights (6-3, 2-1 PacWest). It was not all smooth sailing, as the Eagles utilized a second half comeback push to overcome ARTU, 96-93.

"It was a really big win," said Head Coach Dave Holmquist. "Our team kept doing good things down the stretch. There was some improvement in some areas we have been talking about, so that is also a big part of the night; I feel like we are getting better."

The mark of success came at the 12:00 minute mark in the second half for BU. The team found itself down 75-57 but had its best yet to come.

Biola put together a 27-8 run over the next eight minutes of action. The Eagles turned in 11 field goals and four free throws with six different players scoring the ball. Daniel Esparza led the charge with eight points in the crucial stretch.

The huge rally gave the Eagles the lead at 84-83, thanks to a massive effort on defense. BU held the Urban Knights to 20.0 percent shooting without a three-pointer in the eight-minute stretch. Half of the visitor's points came from the charity stripe, while ARTU gave up three turnovers to Biola's 0.

Biola stayed on the offensive and advanced its lead to six with 1:30 to go in the contest. ARTU managed to pull within one two times in the final minute but Nathan Medina sank four-straight free throws to seal the game.

"This game was huge for us," commented Medina. "We were focused on being aggressive and we kept up the positive energy, talking to each other and continuing to fight."

The sophomore guard paced all scorers on Saturday with 27 points. Even though the three-ball was not falling for him, Medina still made an impact with nine field goals and eight foul shots on nine attempts.

All five starters for the Eagles reached double figures, including Maximo Milovich with 12 points. The forward continued his tear on the boards as well, collecting 14 rebounds for the third-consecutive game and his second double-double in the last three games.

Facundo Aranda offered huge minutes off the bench, securing a steal and score to give the Eagles the lead late in the second half. He finished the night with nine points on 80.0 percent shooting.

Saturday's bout was a physical one with 43 combined fouls. Biola went to the line 25 times with a 72.0 percentage, while ARTU shot 28 free throws with a 67.9 percentage.

96 points for the Eagles was the team's highest total against Academy of Art in the history facing each other.

Biola will be back in action on Monday, hosting Dominican at 7:30 pm.
