Just Missed It

Biola and CSU Dominguez Hills were neck-and-neck from start to finish but the Toros found the edge.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles continued through their litany of CCAA foes, taking on CSU Dominguez Hills (4-1) on Saturday. Biola (2-3) played host to the matchup following Thanksgiving and was in a battle that teetered on the thinnest of margins. The visitors were the ones to pull through in a 80-78 loss for Biola.

Very little separated BU and CSUDH in the weekend bout. Neither team held a lead larger than seven, while the lead changed between them 17 times with 10 ties.

The game came down to the wire with the Eagles trailing for the final five minutes of action but keeping within striking distance.

Myja White cut into the deficit with 1:21 on the clock, knocking down a three-pointer. The big shot brought the team within two points at 78-76. Casey Cappo forced a steal on the next CSUDH possession and the Eagles were off and running.

Nathan Medina drove inside looking for a layup and missed but Cappo was there for the followup. A putback layup from the forward knotted the game at 78 with 26 ticks left.

The Toros did not hesitate and looked to score the final bucket of the game. CSUDH found the game-winner, hitting a layup with four seconds left in the contest. BU hoisted up a prayer just past the timeline but it bounced out for a 80-78 final score.

Daniel Esparza led the charge on offense for BU, tallying 23 points. The point guard shot 61.5 percent from the field and sank five triples on six attempts. Four of his makes from long range came in the second half, helping him to 16 points in the final 20 minutes of action.

Biola struggled from the charity stripe, going 15-22 at the line.  On the other end, CSUDH turned three more attempts into six more makes, sinking 21 of 25 attempts from the free throw line.

Hunter Ruck offered solid minutes off the bench, finishing the day with nine points. The forward was perfect from the field with four makes on four shots.

Biola will be back at home on Tuesday, hosting SAGU American Indian College at 6:00 pm.
