Biola cemented the top seed in the west side of the WWPA with a win over CUI on Thursday.

November 02, 2023

Box Score IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola men's water polo battled back after a tough first half on Thursday to take down Concordia. The Eagles (18-11, 4-0 WWPA) hit the road to take on the Golden Eagles (9-15, 1-2 WWPA) and found success with a 13-10 victory over their fellow WWPA opponent.

Thursday's contest marked the BU squad's final conference matchup before the WWPA Championships later in November. Four total matches against Fresno Pacific and Concordia resulted in four wins for Biola, as the team remained perfect in conference play. The Eagles also took down WWPA members Gannon and McKendree during the regular season.

The afternoon match at CUI opened with a pretty even first quarter, as the Eagles held a mere one point lead.

The second quarter brought a spark for Concordia, who rattled off four goals in the first three minutes of the period. CUI picked up five goals in the quarter and held a 7-5 lead going into the halftime break.

Biola did not need much time to make up the difference on the scoreboard. The visiting Eagles compiled four goals of their own in just over three minutes of game time, retaking the lead before the halfway point of the third stanza. Roman Saroyan aided the push with two goals in the rally.

CUI responded in the fourth, tacking on the first two goals to take control at 10-9. Once again, Biola had its work cut out for them but the team stepped up again.

The Eagles scored on the very next possession to tie the game at 10 with 4:42 left in the contest. BU took care of business in the final two minutes to secure the victory. Maxwell Osborn sent in the go-ahead tally with the help of Nolan Rapp. Two more scores followed for BU in the waning seconds, as the Eagles finished off the 13-10 win.

Caleb Hernandez did not impact the scoreboard directly but still made plays on the attack. The sophomore led the squad with four assists on Thursday.

Rapp led the offense for the Eagles with five points in the win. Rapp grabbed two goals to go along with three assists, while stuffing the stat sheet with two steals and a drawn ejection.

Mitchell Carpenter was stout in the cage with 22 stops on defense. The BU goalkeeper played all 32 minutes and added three steals to his 20-save effort.

Biola will finish off the regular season next Thursday on the road at UC San Diego at 6:00 pm.
