Walking a Tightrope

The margins were narrow in the Lancer Joust opener but the Eagles defeated The University of Toronto.

LA MIRADA --- Biola played host to part of the California Baptist Lancer Joust on Friday, holding games for The University of Toronto, Cuesta College, and Westcliff at Splash! Regional Aquatics Center. The opening match saw the Eagles (13-9) claim victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues (5-4) in a nail-biting 12-9 match.

From the start, BU and U of T battled closely on Friday morning. In the game, the two teams tied six times and had a pair of lead changes. An eight-minute stretch between the first and second quarters saw three goals from both teams, going back and forth with each score.

Biola strung together two-straight goals to gain separation with the last goal of the first half and the first goal of the second. Caleb Hernandez ended the half with a score with 38 seconds remaining, while Nick Murray notched the opening goal of the third three minutes in.

At the start of the fourth, the Varsity Blues responded and knotted the game at eight with six minutes remaining in the match.

Next up came Maxwell Osborn, who put the Eagles back in control. The righty took advantage of an Eagles power play and livened the crowd with a 9-8 BU lead. Nolan Rapp added to the lead next, while Hernandez notched the final two scores on back-to-back Biola possessions to secure the victory.

Rapp and Hernandez were all over the course on Friday. The duo combined for 14 points with each one tallying seven individually. Hernandez paced the team with four goals, matching a career-high. Rapp's stat sheet was flipped with three goals and four assists, while also tying a personal-best in assists.

The scoring was concentrated for the Eagles with five players logging all 12 goals for BU. Osborn and Murray each grabbed multiple scores with two apiece.

Mitchell Carpenter earned the win in the cage and stopped 12 Varsity Blues shots.

Biola will be back in the pool later in the afternoon, facing Westcliff at 2:00 pm.
