Eagles Pile on Points at Slug Shootout

Biola swim and dive stayed consistent through day two at the UC Santa Cruz Slug Shootout to finish in the top four on both sides.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. --- The Eagles wrapped up competition at the UC Santa Cruz Slug Shootout on Saturday and combined for 1320 points between the two squads. 

On the final leaderboard, the Biola women came in second with 766 points. The team came 80 points behind the lead squad, CSU East Bay. The BU men finished the weekend in fourth place, corralling 554 points after 23 events.

Day two saw six event victories for Biola with three coming for the men's and women's teams.

The BU men's swimming and diving squad found quite a bit of success in the backstroke on Saturday. Nathan Griffin was the fastest swimmer in the 50 backstroke, recording a time of 24.41 for first place. In the 200 backstroke, Alejandro Marchesini took control for the victory at 1:55.36 and was followed by Griffin who landed in third at 1:59.35.

More strong performances came through in the 3mtr dive. Caleb Pook took the top spot with a score of 276.65. On the women's side, BU grabbed points from Lorelai Carney in first at 232.00, Eliana Cote in second at 201.05 and Lauren Smith in third at 174.15.

Biola dominated the 50 breaststroke behind the swims of Meghan Tolman and Rachel Munch. The duo were the top two finishers with marks of 30.67 and 31.92, respectively.

Morgan Kampfer nabbed the victory in the 200 butterfly, defeating the field by over a second at 2:09.42.

The women's 200 individual medley saw three Eagles finish within 1.24 seconds of each other. Coco Friedley, Allison Yancey, and Rachel Munch took second, third, and fourth, respectively, finishing with times of 2:11.55, 2:12.05, and 2:12.79.

In the 200 medley relay, both squads grabbed a podium spot. Yancey, Tolman, Kampfer, and Phoebe Munholland combined forces for a second place showing for the women, while Marchesini, Tate Fitzgerald, Matthew Trejo, and Andrew Hanson nabbed third for the men. 

Biola swimming and diving will return home next week, taking on Fresno Pacific in a dual meet on Saturday.
