October 13, 2023

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. --- Biola swimming and diving made a splash to start the UC Santa Cruz Slug Shootout on Friday afternoon. The men's and women's squads grabbed a combined seven event victories, while finishing day one in the top half of teams.

The Biola men compiled 232 points to take fourth place after day one's events. On the women's side, the Eagles were neck-and-neck with the leaders at 341 points in second place, while only trailing CSU East Bay by four points.

The big push for the Eagles came in events seven through nine. Biola won three-straight events, despite the field of 19 teams between the men's and women's competitions. Allison Yancey kicked off the strong stretch with a win in the 100 backstroke. The freshman came home with a time of 57.81 and led all competitors by over a second.

Next up was the men's 100 backstroke, featuring Biola's Nathan Griffin. The sophomore took care of business and swam to first place, edging second place by a mere .03 seconds. Next in the pool was Meghan Tolman in the 100 breaststroke and she kept up the winning streak for Biola. A time of 1:09.24 for Tolman was good enough for first place and another event crown for the Eagles.

Lorelai Carney nabbed first in the women's 1mtr dive with a score of 225.15 and was followed closely by Eliana Cote in second place at 195.00. On the men's side, Caleb Pook was the leader in the clubhouse in the 1mtr dive with a score of 213.75.

The day started and ended with relays and the Eagles scored three podium finishes. In the meet opener, the BU women took silver with a time of 4:00.02  in the 400 medley relay. The men also took second place out of 16 teams with a mark of 3:32.28. To end the day, Phoebe Munholland, Allison Yancey, Katie Ottman, and Sidney MacGillvray combined to finish third in the women's 200 freestyle relay.

Jacob Haaksma delivered a gold performance in the 400 individual medley. The BU veteran put together a swim of 4:13.27 on the way to the first place finish. On the women's side, Rachel Munch took second in the same event, while four Eagles placed in the top 10.

The third event of the day saw an Eagle at the top of the leaderboard in Chloe Colvard. Colvard took the crown in the first run of the 200 freestyle with a mark of 2:00.25

Morgan Kampfer, Angelina, and Coco Friedley came through in order in the 100 butterfly, as the three Eagles placed third, fourth, and fifth, respectively. In the men's 100 butterfly, Sean Rho landed in bronze with a mark of 52.67.

Day two at the UC Santa Cruz Slug Shootout will commence on Saturday to wrap up the weekend competition.
