Gutting It Out

The Eagles pulled ahead late to take down Holy Names on Thursday in a close-knit battle.

LA MIRADA --- Biola men's basketball (9-5, 4-3 PacWest) picked up its fifth-straight win against Holy Names (4-12, 1-7 PacWest), winning in a 85-78 fashion on Thursday night. The Eagles maintained their strong record at home, finding ways to the free throw line to finish out a narrow victory.

Much of the first half action happened at the free throw line. 21 combined fouls resulted from tenacious defensive play on both sides. The Eagles edged the Hawks on the charity stripe in the first half with 14 made free throws compared to 11 from the visitors.

An elongated run by Biola gave the team its largest lead of the first half. A 21-10 rally helped the Eagles create separation through nearly 10 minutes of action. Alex Wright put the exclamation point on the run with a three-pointer, giving the team an eight-point advantage.

Wright was consistently in the mix on offense for BU, leading the way with 20 points. The senior sank nine foul shots and played all 40 minutes, while hitting 20 points for the second time this season.

Coming out of the halftime break, down by six, the Hawks were on a mission. Before the first media timeout, the visitors tied the game at 45, creating intrigue once again.

Daniel Esparza carried the team on BU's next breakout, sinking a trio of long balls and scoring 11 points in three minutes. The scoring outburst led the team to a 62-53 lead with 8:37 on the clock.

HNU kept finding big buckets but the Eagles would also answer, never giving up their lead again. The final buzzer came after solid free throw shooting from BU for a 85-78 finish.

32 free throws made and 38 attempts both made for season-highs for Biola. The team also came up two free throws short of the program record for made free throws in a single game set back in 1980.

Wright and Esparza led the offense with a combined 39 points but were quickly followed by Tyus Parrish-Tillman with 16. The freshman did work inside, cashing in 16 points and 11 rebounds for his first career double-double.

Biola will be back on the court inside Chase Gymnasium on Saturday, facing off against Fresno Pacific at 4:30 pm.
