Clutch Clash

Biola defeated Azusa Pacific on Saturday, thanks to a buzzer beater from Maria Roldan Gonzalez.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The Eagles and Cougars met at a neutral site on Saturday and a showdown ensued. The two teams were separated by a single shot as time expired; a shot tossed by the Eagles. Maria Roldan Gonzalez claimed the victory for Biola with a game-winning goal for a 10-9 BU triumph.

Eight lead changes defined a day of balanced battling between APU and BU. Neither team led by more than two goals in a day marked by the thinnest of margins.

Fittingly, the game came down to the wire. APU knotted the game at nine with 2:52 left on the clock. With the game in balance, any score would tip the scale.

It took all two minutes and 52 seconds but the Eagles found a way to win. The team made its way down the pool as the final seconds waned and right before the buzzer, Roldan Gonzalez gave it one last heave. The shot soared over the keeper and dropped in for the game-winner on Saturday.

Roldan Gonzalez logged her second goal of the game at the buzzer, matching Rachel Spadt and Lizzy Birch who all had a pair of scores. The leader in the clubhouse was Kourtney Pyle with a trio of goals.

Pyle and Spadt teamed up for an important two goals to open up the fourth quarter. The Eagles entered the period down by one but took the lead with back-to-back goals in the final eight minutes.

BU and APU ended the day even at 30 shots apiece but the separation came in the important column, goals: BU-10 APU-9.

The Biola women's water polo squad will complete the California Baptist Mini Tournament with an afternoon contest against Pacific later on Saturday.
