Offense Awakens Against CBU

The Eagles pushed ahead in the early going but were overtaken by Cal Baptist on Friday afternoon.

TEMPE, Ariz. --- For the second time on the day, BU jumped into the pool and faced off against NCAA Division I talent. The afternoon matchup saw the Eagles take on the California Baptist Lancers in a hard-fought contest from start to finish. Biola held a lead through most of the third quarter but the Lancers surged forward in the fourth for a 16-10 BU loss.

The Arizona State Mini Tournament continued on Friday with stiff competition in the pool. The Eagles traveled to Arizona to take on a team that was just down the road from La Mirada in Cal Baptist.

BU found the early edge with quick scores from Maria Roldan Gonzalez and Veralie Naranjo. In the first minute of the contest, the Eagles earned a powerplay and Roldan Gonzalez capitalized. Biola went on to score five times in the first period, cashing in on three CBU exclusions.

The offensive mindset and success continued into the second quarter. Once again, Roldan Gonzalez nabbed a goal off a powerplay, before Rachel Spadt added an even-strength score. The two tallies moved the BU lead to a game-high of four at 7-3.

In the second period, the two teams went even at 3-3, leading to a 8-6 halftime advantage for Biola.

After the break, CBU found its rhythm on both sides of the pool. The second half belonged to the Lancers who tallied 10 goals, while limiting Biola to two through the 16 minutes of action.

Seven different Eagles impacted the scoring column on Friday. Roldan Gonzalez led the way with three goals and Kourtney Pyle followed with two, while five Eagles nabbed one including Spadt, Naranjo, Lizzy Birch, and Mattie Herzog.

Biola thrived in the sprints, winning all four against CBU. Ava LoBue took care of business in the first and third quarters, while Pyle won the faceoff in the second and fourth.

The BU squad will complete the mini tournament on Saturday against the hosting Arizona State Sun Devils at 11:20 am.
