CPP Defends Home

Cal Poly Pomona defended their home field against Biola in a 1-0 win at Kellogg Stadium despite a great effort from the visiting Eagles.

POMONA, Calif.---The Biola University men's soccer team played a tight match against the United Soccer Coaches Association's No.5 Cal Poly Pomona. The Eagles put forth an admirable effort, but were unable to bridge the gap resulting in a 1-0 loss to the fifth-best team in the nation at Kellogg Stadium on Saturday night.

The Eagles were eager to reface the Broncos after their last encounter at the NCAA Tournament. Cal Poly Pomona ended up eliminating Biola in the first round of the West Regional which served as a learning opportunity for the Eagles that qualified for NCAA postseason for the first time in program history.

The Broncos ended up setting the tempo with an early goal in the 9th minute. The Eagles quickly regrouped and defended the remainder of Cal Poly Pomona's pursuits, but were unable to catch the break they needed to tie up or surpass CPP in the match.

The Broncos were consistently aggressive, outshooting the Eagles 19-9. JD Gunn made three saves against CPP, keeping the game within a goal's reach.

Biola nearly tied up the game in the 86th minute with a shot by Nathan Kovalcik, but Cal Poly Pomona's CJ Walker was there to make the save.

The men's soccer team plays next on Wednesday, September 7 against No. 1 Cal State LA. The Eagles will face the Golden Eagles at 7 p.m. at University Stadium.
