Let The Good Times Roll

Kendall Vandertuig goes bananas to lead Biola to a 3-1 lead over Concordia University.

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Biola kept the good times rolling on Wednesday evening with their first PacWest Conference contest against the newly minted Golden Eagles of Concordia University. BU took a commanding two sets to none lead and finished with a dominant 3-1 victory (25-15, 25-22, 22-25, 25-19) over their long-time rivals.

Head Coach Aaron Seltzer called the 10-point win in the opening set the "best set of our entire season." Notably, the Eagles logged an eye-popping 19 kills to just one attacking error in the opening stanza, hitting .514.

Anna Aubele and Kendall Vandertuig did a lot of the heavy lifting for the attack in the first frame, combining for 12 of those 19 team kills with six a piece.

Vandertuig would go on to lead the team with 20 kills in the match, which is a new career-best for the redshirt freshman, topping her previous mark of 13 up at Fresno Pacific about 10 days ago. The 20 kills came at a .310 attacking clip, which jumped her season average significantly.

"It was Kendall's greatest match of her very short freshman season so far," said Seltzer. "She was very consistent."

The Eagles' attack leveled out a bit in the second set, opening a door for CUI to keep things closer. Concordia actually took a 4-1 lead in that game before the teams traded short runs of points until things ultimately rested at 17-17.

Biola used a 5-point run with Vandertuig on the serve to open it up to 21-17 and then never looked back. The 5-point run was book-ended by huge solo blocks for BU and Vandertuig managed back-to-back aces in the middle.

The serve was a strength for Biola from start-to-finish, while it was mostly a pain point for the visiting team. The Eagles had nine aces and nine errors from the line, led by a season-best five aces from Aubele. Concordia, on the flip side, had just eight kills paired with 15 errors.

"Concordia missed a ton of serves in crunch time, and I think that match is a lot different if they were able to keep their serves in," said Seltzer.

CUI was able to sneak one set in this one, winning six of the final eight rallies in the third set to grab a 25-22 win. The Golden Eagles got off to a solid start to game four as well, making it seem for a bit that this match could work its way into a fifth set.

Biola was able to win seven in a row to flip the script and take a stifling 11-6 advantage. Once again, the serve was the weapon of choice with three aces in just that seven-point run alone.

Abby Brewster was working her way all around the court on Wednesday night to be the "unsung hero" of the match according to Seltzer. The Eagles' setter managed 41 assists and helped the team hit .273 overall. Seltzer lauded her set selections in this one and noted her working her way into the attack a little bit as well with three kills. She had 13 digs to earn her sixth double-double of the young season.

Brewster and Bri Bellfi's defense down the stretch was critical in Biola maintaining just enough advantage to pull out the fourth and final set.

"The first three sets were pretty good, we just had to hold on a little bit at the end," said Seltzer.

The win is Biola's third in a row since its surprising defeat at Fresno Pacific back on the 10th. Getting to four straight would sure feel sweet as the Eagles face another of their So. Cal counterparts down at Point Loma on Friday night.

Biola improves to 7-5 (4-1 PacWest) with the win, and they'll face a Sea Lions team that holds a season record of 8-3 (3-0 PacWest). The Sea Lions have four wins in a row, with their most recent outing being a 3-2 defeat of CUI.
