LA MIRADA --- The Biola University men's soccer squad fought until the very end against Cal State San Marcos, ending the night with a 1-1 tie at Al Barbour Field in their season opener.
"It was a really intense matchup," said head coach Joey O'Keefe. "It always is when we get to play San Marcos. We didn't feel great coming off the field because we really thought we could pull off a win at the end, but the guys should keep their heads high because they played so well tonight."
Cal State San Marcos got the early jump on Biola with a goal in the 15th minute, 1-0. After the icebreaking goal the physicality cranked up and the first yellow cards of the match were given out to Clement Michelet and CSUSM's Malachi Wright.
Toward the end of the half a foul on Biola gave them the scoring opportunity they needed.  Haiko Hovak set up junior transfer Kristian Colaci with the Eagles' game-tying goal in the 39th minute which made it a 1-1 draw heading into the second half.
With the playing field evened, both teams felt the intensity. Sixteen fouls and six yellow cards were handed out as both teams fought to gain the advantage. An even eight fouls and three yellow cards were given to each team.
Biola fired away in the final half, outshooting San Marcos 11-1. The Cougars defense swiftly deflected the Eagles' attempts to claim the game, walling up to hold the stalemate. CSUSM's goalie made four saves in the final half which included a top shelf shot by Izaac Zausch in the 84th minute.
"At the end of the day the ball didn't fall in the back of the net to get the win for us, but it's early in the season and I'm excited to see the senior class pick up the team with their strong leadership." concluded O'Keefe.
Biola plays next Wednesday, August 31st at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Eagles take on the Toros at 6 p.m. at Toros Stadium. For more game day information, check out the men's soccer schedule.
