LA MIRADA --- In the wake of the 2022 MLB draft, the remaining prospects look to take advantage of the undrafted free agent signing period. Tyler Baca will be getting his opportunity with the Washington Nationals, after signing with the team on Wednesday.

Baca completed his fourth season for Biola in 2022, putting in work from the outfield, while hitting for average at the plate. The senior put together a standout campaign in his final year, setting career-bests in nearly every statistical category. Baca showed off his speed this past season, tying for fifth in the PacWest with 16 steals.

The burst in production helped the switch-hitter receive recognition from scouts and from Biola Athletics. At the end of the year Biola Athletics Gala, Baca collected the EDDIE for Breakout Athlete of the Year.

"I'd like to thank coach Calhoon and his staff for allowing me the ability to develop my skills over these past four years," Baca said. "Coach Calhoon gave me the opportunity to be an everyday college baseball player. He also taught me important values that not only relate to the game of baseball but to life as well. I'm thankful for my time at Biola and again would like to thank the coaches, training staff, as well as my teammates."

Baca was on fire to start his senior season, notching a .422 batting average through the opening 20 games of 2022. The center fielder also added a 13-game hitting streak and 13 multi-hit performances in the campaign.

Head coach Jeff Calhoon is excited for Baca's big opportunity, "I am so proud of Tyler and this chance he has earned. He is a selfless, quiet leader who had a great year without garnering a lot of attention. He is a great young man that brings an old school toughness to the way he plays. I am so excited for Tyler and his family on this opportunity."

Baca is the second Eagle to join the pro ranks this summer, joining teammate Connor Butler who was selected in the draft by the Boston Red Sox.
