LA MIRADA --- The 2021-22 year was jam-packed with action from Biola's 18 programs who overcame obstacles which led to successes, thrilling moments, and memories that will last forever. As the 2022-23 year approaches, we would like to look back and highlight some special moments from the past year for our fall, winter and spring sports. 

The Women's Golf PacWest Championship crown belonged to the Biola Eagles in 2022. Biola earned its first PacWest title in program history and made its way to the NCAA West Regional stage to compete in Stockton, California. BU finished amongst the top five in all but two tournaments and reached new heights under head coach Jane Carr, who was named PacWest Coach of the Year.

Senior Sami Penor pushed the pace for the Eagles squad, offering the best tournament on the way to the conference championship. The veteran also won the Jack Brown Memorial Invitational and made the All-PacWest First Team. Adding to the noise, Brady Turnquist was also selected to the All-PacWest First Team. The sophomore nabbed two tournament victories, and four PacWest Player of the Week awards, including a span of three-straight.

A core group of first-year players made an immediate impact for the Eagles throughout the campaign. Lauren Lee highlighted the group as the PacWest Freshman of the year. Including Lee, three BU freshmen helped score the conference crown, while earning spots on the All-PacWest teams.

Biola saw a new beginning in 2022 with the inaugural season of its women's water polo program. Under head coach Sarah Orozco, the Eagles picked up 13 wins with a winning record in conference play. BU grabbed the No. 2 seed in the west coast side of the Western Water Polo Tournament. Through the postseason conference tourney, Biola opened and closed with wins to finish third in the group of eight teams.

The new team collected plenty of recognition for its impressive year. Hanna Jordan, Veralie Naranjo and Rachel Spadt were each honored by the ACWPC as All-Americans. BU also pulled in six All-WWPA selections in 2022.

Records were broken across both tennis programs in 2022. The men's team surged past their previous best win total and ended the year with an 18-9 mark. Biola continued to fight, reaching the NCAA West Regional stage for the first time in program history. Throughout the successful stretch, the Eagles climbed in the ITA National Rankings, reaching as high as No. 18 in the nation.

Biola capped off 2022 with a fifth place finish at the PacWest Championships, thanks to superb play from its two First Team All-PacWest selections, Sebastian Herrera and Alexei Prokopchuk. Herrera added to his accolades with an ITA Singles All-American award.

BU women's tennis also notched its best record in program history with a 21-6 mark in 2022. The team earned a No. 10 rating in the ITA National Ranking and logged wins over No. 7 Hawaii Pacific and No. 11 Azusa Pacific. Biola put together a 14-match winning streak in 2022, helping them to the third seed in the PacWest Championships.

Mary Brascia and Colbeyshae Emery carried the load for BU, dominating the No. 2 and No. 1 singles, respectively. The duo each made the All-PacWest Team for their singles play and as doubles partners.

On the diamond, Biola baseball capped off 2022 fourth in the PacWest at 18-14 in conference play. An unforgettable moment for BU came against Hawaii Pacific on April 28. A 2-0 deficit was erased with one swing, as Wyatt Duncan knocked a three-run walkoff homer to help complete a four-game sweep of the Sharks.

Oscar Serratos added to the excitement when he hit for the cycle on April 8, accomplishing the feat for the first time in program history. The shortstop also hit three homers in a single game, before grabbing a flurry of postseason awards including First Team All-PacWest, NCBWA and ABCA/Rawlings All-Region and PacWest Newcomer of the Year.

Paige Austin headlined for the BU softball squad with numerous highlights in 2022. The senior put together her best season in La Mirada on the way to a PacWest Pitcher of the Year, NFCA/D2CCA All-Region, D2CCA West Region Pitcher of the Year and NFCA/D2CCA First Team All-American honors. With 205 strikeouts, Austin became the program leader for career strikeouts, while also adding a pair of no-hitters.

As a team, Biola went 25-18 overall and 18-12 in PacWest play. 18 wins in conference was good enough for third place and the team corralled five All-PacWest awards, including four first team and one second team selections.

For men's track and field, the Eagles pushed forward towards a fifth place mark at the PacWest Championships at Point Loma. BU landed seven top-five finishes, including a second place 4x400 relay. 

Cole Muller was a major contributor for Biola, making an impact as a true freshman. Muller was a well-rounded talent for BU, grabbing a win in the long jump and the 200 during the 2022 season. Joshua Jackson also logged an event win, notching his personal-best in the long jump at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Meet at 14.30m.

On the women's side, the BU squad also finished the PacWest Championships in fifth place. Jada Pierce and Joley Sproul highlighted the weekend with each athlete earning an event victory. Pierce took the win in the hammer throw at 49.31m and Sproul won the heptathlon at 4,334 points.

The Eagles also offered up a NCAA Nationals competitor in Lynette Ruiz. The freshman broke the program record in the 10,000 in her collegiate debut in the event with a time of 35:18.47. The time reached the NCAA Provisional mark and Ruiz earned a trip to the nationals competition and took 13th place in the 10,000 run.

The 2021-22 year provided many amazing moments for each and every program in Biola Athletics. As they close the book on their previous year, the Eagles now look ahead to an even better 2022-23 season to come.
