Couldn’t Be Closer

The margin of defeat was minuscule, as the Eagles nearly pulled off the upset at Point Loma.

SAN DIEGO --- An up-and-down Saturday featured a doubleheader battle between Biola (14-22, 10-10 PacWest) and the hosting fourth-ranked Point Loma Sea Lions (33-5, 15-5 PacWest). After a lopsided game one, the two teams entered a pitching duel in the back half of the day. An error in the seventh and final frame opened the door for the winning run, as PLNU pulled off the sweep.

The pitching staff for Biola stepped up in game two following three-straight double-digit showings from the Point Loma offense.

Gilbert Lopez toed the rubber to kick things off with his best outing of the season against one of the top teams in the nation. Despite allowing a base runner in each frame, Lopez consistently found the crucial out to get out of the inning free of any damage.

The righty put together 3.2 innings of work on the mound in the start, collecting two strikeouts, four flyouts and five groundouts. In the midst of the fourth inning, Lopez handed the ball off to Connor Butler to take over.

The hard throwing lefty picked up right where his teammate left off, picking up a necessary out to finish the fourth without a run. The fifth had a similar feel with the bases loaded but once again Butler got the job done by forcing a groundout to first base.

Butler settled in as the game shifted into the sixth. The reliever posted a strikeout for all three outs of the frame, keeping the game at 0 runs apiece heading into the final inning.

The pitching stayed on point in the final frame but an error opened the inning and ended the inning, helping the Sea Lions collect the winning run in a 1-0 final.

The Biola bats struggled throughout the day against the top-tier Point Loma pitching. In game two the Eagles managed four base runners with a pair of hits.

Game one was heavily in Point Loma's favor but in the top of the ninth Biola put together a rally to avoid the shutout. Riley Mitchell started the final at bat with a single and was followed by a walk from Brandon Thomas. Pinch-hitter Jonathan Smith notched the lone RBI of the day, singling through the right side of the infield to bring the final score of game one to 18-1.

BU will be back at Eagles Diamond on Tuesday with a single game at 2:00 pm against Concordia.
