Successful Second Turn

Biola answers back to Friday loss to CSU East Bay with a statement win.

March 12, 2022

Box Score
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Strong passing, accurate shooting and a huge third quarter keyed a Biola victory on Saturday as the Eagles knocked off a CSU East Bay team 14-12 in a thriller.

It was a major victory for Head Coach Sarah Orozco's Eagles as they answer back for a 15-5 loss to CSUEB just one day earlier.

The Eagles were behind the eight-ball early in that loss, but there was no slow start in Saturday's edition of this budding rivalry. Biola scored the first goal of the game as Veralie Naranjo tallied a power play score just over a minute in.

This was in contrast to yesterday's contest where CSUEB led 6-0 before the Eagles found the twine.

It was a competitive first half after that as the score was tied or lead changed eight times in the first period. Biola led 1-0, CSUEB led 2-1 and then Biola took the lead at 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4 as the wild first eight minutes finally elapsed.

Naranjo had three of Biola's first period goals to power the effort early. She'd finish the last game of the weekend with four goals and two assists in a phenomenal effort.

It was another tough quarter for the goalkeepers in the second period as the teams combined for seven goals. Biola edged East Bay by one goal again in the period to advance their lead out to two goals at 9-7.

Hanna Jordan scored twice in the second frame, accounting for half of the four goals she'd tally on the afternoon.

The third period is where Biola would take firm control of the game. The Eagles limited CSU East Bay to just two scores in the third, helping expand the advantage out to five goals headed into the final frame.

Biola's scoring was coming from everywhere as the Eagles worked hard to find the open look and cashed in with regularity, shooting 56 percent in the game (14-for-25). Naranjo and Maria Roldan Gonzalez were prime examples of the successful shooting in this match. Roldan Gonzalez was a perfect 3-for-3 on shots, while Veralie's four scores came on just five attempts.

The Pioneers managed three goals in the fourth, while Biola did not score again after Roldan Gonzalez scored the Eagles' 14th of the game in the third quarter.

The win breaks a short streak of losses for Biola and sends them into a WWPA road trip with some confidence. Biola improved to 6-12 overall with the win. CSUEB dropped to 7-12.

Biola hits the road this weekend as they face CSU Monterey Bay on Friday at 7 p.m. in Seaside and then play at CSU East Bay at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
