Dominican Does Just Enough

Biola suffers a loss in Tuesday's game one as Dominican puts up two to the Eagles' one.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Single runs in the fourth and fifth innings allow hosts Dominican to steal game three of the series against Biola as the Eagles' offense sputters a bit on Tuesday. The Eagles fall to the Penguins 2-1 to drop to 5-2 on their NorCal road trip so far.

Leadoff singles came back to haunt Paige Austin in the fourth and fifth, allowing Dominican to get the win despite Biola managing to score first in this one. The Penguins had seven hits to Biola's four as Dominican's Kathryn Caravalho and Shelby Keltner limited BU to only one third-inning run.

The run in the third inning came as Rilee Ruvalcaba got a one-out stand-up double and later came around to score on a single from Allie Beck right back up the middle.

The Eagles' bats were abnormally quiet in this one, going down in order in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh innings. Even with a single in the first inning, only three batters came to the plate due to a caught stealing situation.

Biola will need to make some adjustments to put a lot more pressure on the Dominican pitchers in game two Tuesday and end this trip on a high note.

Austin threw all six innings and struck out seven while walking just one, but she only had one 1-2-3 inning, pitching under more stress than usual.

In both innings where Dominican scored their runs, the Penguins score the run with one out in the inning and had additional base runners reach before Austin would eventually work out of the jam and limit the damage to the two instances of just one run.

Unfortunately, that was enough to get the job done today, handing Biola just its second conference loss of the year while affording Dominican its first PacWest win. It's the first time Dominican has beaten Biola in an official PacWest Conference competition.

The two teams have one more game in this four-game set, which will have it's first pitch somewhere around 2:20 p.m. Follow the game live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/dominican/.
