Focus Turns to Fresno

The Eagles finished off its 2022 regular season on Saturday afternoon at Dominican.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- The final contest of the regular season featured a road battle for BU on Saturday afternoon. A lopsided fourth quarter thwarted the Biola comeback bid as they fell to Dominican, 76-58.

Following a 17-10 overall 2022 regular season and a 13-7 PacWest record, the Eagles have secured the fifth-seed for the upcoming PacWest Tournament. Biola is slated to face off against the same opponent the team played earlier in the week, Academy of Art, in the opening round.

On Saturday, ball control was a major concern for both sides. BU and DUC collected 20 plus turnovers each, thanks to impressive defensive effort from everyone on the court.

The hosting Penguins were able to take advantage of the giveaways to the tune of 26 points off of turnovers, while the Eagles managed 14 themselves.

After falling behind by 11 in the first half, BU looked to bounce back after the halftime break. The team regrouped in the third quarter and put it to the Penguins. BU offered up an 18-5 rally through eight minutes of action.

Aysia Johnson provided the spark, notching 10 points in the favorable BU run. A three-pointer from the guard capped off the rally, giving Biola its first lead since the opening minutes of the game.

Dominican scored five-straight to end the third, regaining a three-point edge before going into the final stanza. A free throw from Laila Walker cut the BU deficit to two at the beginning of the fourth but that was the closest Biola would get. The Penguins turned up the pressure on defense and limited the Eagles to 10 points in the final quarter. The strong run for the host squad turned into the 76-58 final margin.

Johnson and Amiah Simmons reached double figures in the scoring column, collecting 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Three Eagles nabbed at least two steals on the day, helping contribute to the team's nine steals. The group included Walker, Jordan Rabe and Stephanie Lee, who led the squad with three.

Shooting woes plagued BU, as the team hit just four long balls on 21 attempts. The 19.0 three-point field goal percentage was well below the team's season average of 32.1 percent.

BU will be back in action at the PacWest Tournament on Thursday, March 3 at 5:00 pm against fourth-seeded Academy of Art.
