Narrow Margins, Wide Win

Despite close matches throughout the day, Biola went on to sweep Cal State LA, 7-0.

LOS ANGELES --- The 25th-ranked Biola Eagles made the trek to Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon to take on Cal State Los Angeles. The Eagles took care of business in the fashion of a 7-0 shutout, sweating out multiple close matchups.

The nail-biters started from the opening serves in doubles play. The hosting Golden Eagles jumped ahead early with a 6-3 win on court No. 3.

BU needed both of the remaining matches to grab the first point of the competition. Both courts went to a tiebreaker knotted at six games apiece. Court No. 1 wrapped up next with Mary Brascia and Colbeyshae Emery holding on for the win. The duo won the tiebreaker, 7-2. The final match came down to Alexandria Mann and Brooke Fager. The tandem displayed great poise and narrowly grabbed a 7-5 edge in the tiebreaker to give Biola the 1-0 lead.

The momentum carried over into singles play, as the Eagles quickly clinched a victory with four straight-set triumphs. Ines Diaz was cruising in her matchup. From the No. 6 spot, Diaz refused to give up a single game on the way to a 6-0, 6-0 shutout.

Lilly McNeill followed suit, taking the first set, 6-4, before capping off the win with a 6-0 rout. Brascia and Gaby Carvajal logged the other two straight-set wins for the Eagles.

Emery and Mann traded the first two sets with their opponents, needing a third set to close out the contest. With the match clinched in BU's favor, the two matches did not compete in a full third set. Both Mann and Emery finished off a 10-4 tiebreaker set to complete the Biola shutout.

Biola will return home for its next contest, taking on No. 11 Azusa Pacific at 10:00 am at the Biola Tennis Center.
