Eagles Conquer

The Biola women’s tennis team upset the visiting No. 11 APU Cougars on Saturday.

LA MIRADA --- The No. 25 Eagles came out on top, beating 11th-ranked Azusa Pacific at home, 5-2. The BU squad competed through tough competition, conquering the Cougars for the first time since 1998.

"The girls came out with a ton of heart and a desire to win. A goal for us this year was to make APU a rivalry again and that is what we did. This team showed a lot of confidence today. I am very proud of them," said Head Coach David Goodman.

A perfect sunny day set the tone for a perfect tennis match for the Eagles. The day started with doubles, as the home team jumped ahead early with a 6-2 win on the first court from Colbeyshae Emery and Mary Brascia. BU was granted a 1-0 lead in each doubles match from the official due to the Cougars being late to the courts for the start of the match. Gaby Carvajal and Ines Diaz were the next to step up for Biola, as they secured the clutch point win for doubles, 6-4.

The Cougars were off to a good start in the singles portion, as Madison Kane swept her contest in two sets, both 6-3. Lilly McNeill changed the pace for the Eagles from the No 4 spot, as she finished in two sets defeating her opponent in both set one and two, 6-3.

Brooke Fager showed up and delivered as she zoned in to secure the win in only two sets (6-1, 6-3), putting Biola in the lead 3-1. The star freshman Alexandria Mann played her heart out as she clinched the win for the BU squad in three sets against Carolyn Brooner, winning the first and third set 6-2, and 6-3, and falling short in the second set 1-6.

Ines Diaz added a win on court No. 6, overcoming a first set loss to come out on top in three sets.

The stellar victory moved the Biola women's tennis squad record to 5-1 in the season. The team will now prepare for another home match against Fresno Pacific on Friday at 3 p.m. on February 25.  For live stats links and updates check athletics.biola.edu.
