Countdown to Victory

As the end of 2022 approached, the Eagles claimed a triumph before the start of the new year.

LA MIRADA --- New Year's Eve festivities would have to wait for the Biola men's basketball squad, who took on La Sierra on Saturday evening. Before the calendar switched to 2023, the Eagles picked up their eighth win of the season, defeating La Sierra by a final score of 81-46.

The Eagles played host to the weekend competition, seeing their fifth game inside Chase Gymnasium. The win moved their record at home this season to 4-1, while improving their overall record to 8-5.

Alex Wright made sure to have something to celebrate with 15 points in the opening 10 minutes of the game. Biola showcased its ball movement against the LSU zone defense, finding Wright open beyond the arc. Wright capitalized with five three-pointers, helping the Eagles to a 21-point lead.

BU's five starters carried the torch through the first 10 minutes and change. The group put together its best stretch from the 16 minute mark to the 10 minute mark with a 17-1 run. During the rally, Biola went 7-13 from the field, while holding the Golden Eagles to 0-7 shooting with four turnovers. Six different Eagles scored in the impressive run.

The bench unit kept up the defensive pressure and pushed the team to a 48-24 halftime advantage. Casey Cappo led the way for the reserves with seven points off the bench in the first half.

La Sierra continued to fight by getting to the free throw line throughout the second half but the Eagles staved off any advancements by the visitors. BU fought through with small advantages to continue to build its lead.

The Eagles' lead peaked at 37 in the game thanks to 51.6 percent shooting from the floor and 44.0 percent shooting from three-point land. BU also took advantage of 18 LSU turnovers, creating 29 points off Golden Eagle mishaps on the way to the victory.

As a team, Biola nabbed nine blocks to set a season-high. Tyus Parrish-Tillman also added a personal-best, securing five rejections on Saturday.

Biola will look for win number nine on Thursday when it returns to PacWest play against Holy Names at 7:30 pm inside Chase Gym.
