Eagles Survive

Biola’s conference opener was a nail-biter on the road against Fresno Pacific but the Eagles held on for the narrow win.

FRESNO, Calif. --- Biola made the trip to Fresno on Thursday and survived a second half surge from the Sunbirds. Conference play began with a tough battle for the BU men's basketball squad (5-2, 1-0 PacWest), as they eked out a 63-61 victory over Fresno Pacific (2-5, 0-1 PacWest).

The Eagles continued their winning ways, extending their win streak to three on Thursday. The effort from the team was well-rounded, as four Eagles reached double-digits in scoring. Alex Wright led the way with 13 points and was followed closely by Daniel Esparza, Erik Howlin, and Casey Cappo.

Howlin was the instigator in the early going, tacking on ten points in the first nine minutes of the game. He was doing it all for BU, scoring from the outside with two threes and finishing at the rim with two layups.

The team pulled ahead for the highest lead of the game, 14 points, at 34-20. A huge 27-11 run for the Eagles completely changed the pace of the contest. BU would go on to enter the half up by 10 but the Sunbirds did not have any quit in them.

The host squad came out firing in the second half. Through the first seven minutes of the half, FPU offered up 18 points to just three from Biola. The Eagles could not buy a bucket, going 1-11 in the stretch.

Quickly down by five, the BU squad needed to answer. The offense stepped up, scoring on five-of-six possessions, while holding FPU to one made shot, retaking the lead at 51-48.

Biola never gave up its advantage for the rest of the way, coming up big on both ends to seal the win. Wright padded the BU lead in the key moment, sinking a layup and assisting on a basket from Maximo Milovich, helping the team to a five point lead with 30 seconds left. A last second three-pointer from FPU trimmed the deficit but ultimately the game came to a rest at 63-61 for a Biola victory.

Wright notched a double-double on Thursday, impacting the scoreboard and the rebounding battle. 13 points and 13 rebounds were both team-highs for the veteran.

BU basketball will move on and play Holy Names on Saturday in Oakland, CA at 3:00pm.
