Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Back On Track

Biola leads for all but a minute in a decisive win over CSUDH.

CARSON, Calif. — Biola Men's Basketball picked up its second NCAA Division II victory of the season on Tuesday night as it led just about wire-to-wire in a strong showing against CSU Dominguez Hills on the road.

The Eagles caught the turnover bug in this one and CSUDH caught fire from the field in the final five minutes to bring this game just close enough to create a little late consternation, but Biola held on for a thrilling 64-56 victory.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for BU, and it pushed Dr. Dave Holmquist's team back up over .500 with a 3-2 season record. The win gives Holmquist 990 career victories at Biola, while pushing his all-time mark to 1,026.

Biola turned the ball over 25 times in this one, which allowed CSUDH to creep back into the game late. However, Biola maintained just enough distance on its opponents thanks to the ever-steady presence of both Alex Wright and Maximo Milovich. Those two combined to make nine of their final 11 attempts from the floor in this contest to keep Biola out front.

The Eagles held the lead for all but one minute and 26 seconds during this game. The hosting Toros only held the lead once, at 4-3, but a Daniel Esparza three-pointer a minute later gave BU back the lead and one it would never relinquish.

It was a very, very slow start offensively for both teams as they hovered around 30 percent shooting for much of the first half and it was just 15-12 at 13 full minutes into the game. Neither team scored between the 10:39 mark and 6:59 mark in that first frame.

Both offenses found their groove throughout the second half. Biola was +12 in scoring during period two, while the Toros made a massive jump to +18.

Biola's largest lead in the game came when there was just under five minutes remaining. Wright drove to the rim and laid the ball up to provide his Eagles a 50-36 lead for a 14-point advantage over the home team.

CSUDH cut into the lead pretty well with an explosive 11-3 run over the next three minutes to suddenly find themselves within six points. Another three-point make from Jordan Hilstock allowed the Toros to get even closer as they made it 57-53 with just 1:13 on the clock.

Biola's next shot attempt was the most important of the night as Erik Howlin dished the ball to Esparza, who drained his second three of the evening to buy his team breathing room and ultimately do enough to ensure the win.

The Eagles were once again dominant on the glass. They brought down 45 rebounds to CSUDH's 24. That helped them recover a bit from setting their new season-high for turnovers. It was the third outing this season where BU has had 40 or more rebounds.

Milovich, of course, led the way on that front. The Argentinian buried any thoughts of the World Cup loss from this morning with a monster game. He had 12 points and 11 rebounds in 29 minutes, limited just a bit by foul trouble.

Wright would finish as BU's leading scorer, tallying a new season-high of 21 points. He and Milovich both went 5-for-8 from the field in consistent, conservative efforts.

Esparza (11) and Hunter Ruck (10) each also eclipsed double-digit scoring. Ruck was once again one rebound away from what would've been his first double-double of the year.

Up next for the Eagles is one last dance before Thanksgiving. Biola hosts SAGU-American Indian College on Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. in Chase Gymnasium. Follow the game live by viewing for free at https://team1sports.com/biola.
