Overtime Not Our Time

Biola suffers 13-11 loss to FPU in opening round of WWPA tournament.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Fresno Pacific overcame a slow start and shined in overtime to defeat Biola 13-11 in the opening contest of the 2022 Western Water Polo Association Tournament.

The Eagles started strong, scoring first and then adding three-consecutive goals to stake a 4-1 lead early in the second period. FPU answered back with back-to-back goals of their own before a late tally from Luke Franklin allowed Biola to surge back ahead by two at 5-3. Throughout the day Mitchell Carpenter was a standout performer for Biola in between the pipes. He knocked down 15 FPU shots to keep the Eagles in it. He more than doubled the amount of saves from his FPU counterpart (7).

The Sunbirds got back within one goal before halftime and then outscored Biola by one in the second half to set up the decisive double-overtime battle.

Biola got a steal from Nolan Rapp with :46 seconds left on the clock in the fourth period and the match tied at nine, but the Eagles could not convert on the ensuing position to pull ahead late.

Fresno Pacific tallied the first goal after winning the opening spring in overtime. The Eagles answered immediately with a sweet score from Gavin Oliver to tie it at 10 with 2:13 left in the first period of extra time.

FPU scored on the next possession to take back the lead, and then they scored immediately at the start of the sixth period as Blake Johnson scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal to make the game 12-10.

Oliver would score once more to get BU back within one again, but his tally with 1:11 would be all Biola could manage in this one.

The No. 9 seed defeated the No. 8 seed to advance in the tournament. It was a repeat but reverse of last year's matchup between these teams when Biola was the 9-seed and beat the 8-seeded Sunbirds.

Luke Franklin scored four times to lead Biola in this one. He and Will Tibbetts tied as the game's leading point-earners for BU. Tibbetts converted three goals and added an assist.

Biola will play again at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Loyola Marymount.
