Cross-Conference Tussle

Biola took on a top CCAA opponent in Cal Poly Pomona on Friday and came up short on the road.

POMONA, Calif. --- Biola men's basketball (2-1) saw its toughest matchup of the season so far, taking on Cal Poly Pomona (2-1) on Friday evening. The battle was evenly matched but the Broncos climbed ahead in the final one minute and change for the 63-59 final.

The PacWest and CCAA clashed on Friday with the Eagles making the trip to Cal Poly Pomona.

The early going did not have much shooting for BU, who struggled from long range. Through the opening 20 minutes, Biola went 2-16 from beyond the arc and trailed by six.

The CPP advantage maxed out at 12 but the Eagles battled before the halftime break. Hunter Ruck notched a pair of layups to help Biola close the half with a 6-0 run in the final 1:50.

A break in the game did not stop the Biola momentum. BU picked up its first lead of the game with a 13-6 run at the start of the second half. The run pushed Biola into the lead at 39-38.

The Broncos immediately bounced back ahead and regained their edge from the 13 minute mark through the 2 minute mark.

Nathan Medina stepped up with the game heading toward its end, nailing two threes in three possessions. The six point burst combined with a pair of free throws from Daniel Esparza made for eight-straight points for the Eagles. Once again, BU closed the gap to 57 with just 1:35 on the clock.

The final push was made by CPP, as the host squad claimed the lead on the next basket and held on for the 63-59 final score.

Esparza finished off the game with a team-high 18 points, behind a strong night at the line, 6-7.

Maximo Milovich nabbed his first double-double of 2022 with his strength inside. The 6-8 forward from Argentina recorded 11 points and 13 rebounds, which led all players on Friday.

BU will remain in Pomona on Saturday, facing off against No. 9 CSU San Bernardino at 4:30 pm.
