October 24, 2022

LOS ANGELES --- The first dual meet of the year for the Eagles, resulted in a favorable finish over the weekend. BU swimming and diving picked up a win on both sides in a road matchup at Occidental.

The men piled on 173 points on the day to take down the Tigers by a margin of 63 (173-110). Nine event wins helped propel the winning effort but overall depth created the large separation.

The BU women also tacked on nine event victories, including a pair of relays. The bout was much closer on the women's side but BU still claimed the triumph by a 161-134 final score.

Abby DePina took care of business for Biola in diving, logging wins in the 1m and 3m competitions. In the 1m dive, DePina finished in first with a score of 234.60, which beat the rest of the field by 50 points. Eliana Cote nabbed second in the 3m dive at 228.85, just one point behind DePina at 229.50.

Caleb Pook dominated the dive on the men's side. The freshman won in the 1m and 3m dives by a combined 129 points.

The backstroke belonged to BU, as the team notched the top two spots in the 100 yd race and the top three in the 200 yd event. Caden Drefs took the crown in the shorter race and was followed closely by Nathan Griffin. Ryan Monrean came through for the victory in the 200 backstroke, leading Drefs and Griffin who were second and third.

BU's women's relays were in control on Saturday. The 400 yd freestyle relay of Phoebe Munholland, Sofia Chavez-Varela, Morgan Kampfer and Kolya Vos logged a time of 3:36.22 for first place. A group of Vos, Anna Haaksma, Kampfer and Munholland worked together on the 200 medley relay and came away with the crown with a mark of 1:49.82.

Biola women's swimming and diving will be back in action on November 5 at Azusa Pacific and the men will be back in the pool on November 12 at the Soka Invite.
