Keeping the Pace

Fresh off a Thursday victory, Biola women’s basketball kept its groove with a win at Chaminade.

HONOLULU, Hawaii --- The Eagles (8-4, 4-2 PacWest) picked up where they left off on Thursday night, turning in a stellar first quarter against Chaminade (1-7, 0-4 PacWest). The fast start pushed Biola to a 65-53 victory in its second game in Hawaii.

Two days following a fourth quarter comeback win, the Eagles maintained the momentum with a game-winning effort in the first 10 minutes of Saturday's contest.

The first quarter was the difference for BU, as the team built a quick 11-point lead. Biola did its part defensively, holding the Swords to six points in the opening stanza. The host squad managed to go 3-13 from the field, while giving up eight turnovers against the stifling BU defense.

On the other side of the ball, the Eagles used their aggressiveness to reach the foul line and gain an early advantage. BU went 6-6 from the charity stripe on the way to 17 points.

A favorable BU run to start the second opened up a game-high lead of 20 points for BU but Chaminade was not done fighting. The hosting Swords limited their deficit to seven by halftime, before cutting it to four in the third quarter.

The response was quick from the visitors, who piled on 10 unanswered points to rebuild its double-digit lead. Four different Eagles impacted the scoreboard in the rally, while Chaminade missed six-straight shot attempts.

Biola held on to its double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter, resulting in the 65-53 finish.

Amiah Simmons led the way in the scoring column with 18 points on Saturday. The freshman secured her 11th outing with at least 10 points this season through just 12 games this season.

The BU defense was humming on Saturday, as the team held a pair of Chaminade starters scoreless through the contest.

Jordan Rabe neared a double-double in the win with 11 points and eight rebounds. She was only outdone by Stephanie Lee in the rebounding column, as Lee nabbed a season-high nine boards.

"We had a sloppy win but we were able to grind it out," said Rabe following the victory. "Our trip has been amazing thus far and we are just thankful to have two wins under our belt."

The Eagles will wrap up their trip to Hawaii on Monday with a 2:00 pm PST matchup at Hawaii Hilo.
