Biola Women's Water Polo shows spirit in close battle against No. 11 UCSD.

January 29, 2022

Box Score
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — With another day came another opportunity for Biola Women's Water Polo to prove itself as not just any first-year water polo program. One long run of goals stood out as a testament to this team's tenacity.

The Eagles showed up and held strong against the No. 11 team in the country, UC San Diego in a gritty battle during the CBU Lancer Joust. The Eagles scored in double figures for the second time in four times out this season, falling to the Tritons by a 17-10 final score.

The Eagles again had a balanced scoring attache with goals coming from up and down the lineup as BU logged its second-best shooting performance of the season with a .455 clip.

Veralie Naranjo once again tallied a hat trick and climbed up to 11 goals for the season with her third multi-goal game. Maria Roldan Gonzalez also continued her solid week with a pair of scores to push into the quarter of Eagles with 10 or more points this season.

UCSD opened the scoring with a power play goal on their first possession of the game. They would take a 2-0 advantage before Gonzalez entered the picture for BU halfway through the first.

The game changed as UCSD scored four in a row during a three-minutes stretch late in the first and into the second quarter to jump out to a 6-1 lead.

Rather than be discouraged and disconnected, the Eagles rose from nearly dead to bring the game back to a brand new start before halftime. BU scored five in a row between the 7:00 and 1:55 marks in the second quarter to flip the game from 6-1 all the way to 6-6.

Roldan Gonzalez began the scoring stretch before two from Naranjo and one each from Pyle and Hanna Jordan brought it back level. Four of those five goals were straight-up even strength, showing that despite its newness, Biola is ready to compete at the top levels of collegiate Women's Water Polo.

The Tritons scored one headed into halftime to take a 7-6 lead into the break. They'd also score four of the first five goals in the second half to extend out to the four-goal 11-7 lead with just about 11 minutes left in the contest.

Biola would get single tallies from Pyle, Lizzy Birch and Rachel Spadt over those remaining 11 minutes, but would not be able to replicate the awesome run they put together back in the second.

The Eagles fall to 1-3 following the loss, but they have a chance to salvage the weekend with a 3:30 p.m. matchup with Redlands (https://www.thefosh.net/live/12149). The win pushed UCSD to 3-2 on the year with its only losses being ranked opponents UCLA and Wagner.
