LA MIRADA --- Biola is all set to prove themselves on the NCAA DII West Region stage in the new 2022 campaign.  24 matches are on the horizon for the BU squad, as they vie for a third-straight season with a plus .500 winning percentage.

In 2021, the Eagles collected 10 wins, while going 7-5 at the Biola Tennis Center. The upcoming season will see 16 competitions in La Mirada, beginning with the season-opener on Friday. The 2022 kickoff event will be an exhibition match against NCAA DI foe, UC Davis.

"We are excited for another season of play. The men have worked hard this fall and feel that they have a lot to prove," said head coach David Goodman. In his sixth year at the helm, Goodman has his team ready for the challenge of the new campaign.

A fresh season means a new focus for the men's tennis squad. The crucial first point of every tennis match comes with the winner of the doubles best-of-three portion and the team will look to improve in that area in 2022.

"A key component for our men's team this year is doubles. That was a struggle for us last year to really gel as a team and get matches started in the right direction," commented Goodman. "We've worked really hard on improving the little things in our doubles and we hope that makes a difference this year." 

During their offseason, the Eagles stayed in shape with ITA competitions. Sebastian Herrera stepped up his game to thrive in these top-tier bouts, gaining regional acclaim.  

"It was great to see Sebastian take his game to the next level this fall. I think we're going to be counting on him a lot more in these big matches this year," said Goodman.

Last spring, Herrera went 7-5 as an individual for Biola with 10 matches from the No. 2 spot. The junior started 2021 on fire, winning his first five matches that were completed.

"I'm also excited to see what the new guys bring to the table," added Goodman. "Tomas, Callen and Carlos all have some great skill sets and a strong work ethic. I think they add a lot to the team and make us better.

The group of newcomers and young talent will look to make an early impact for the Biola Eagles. Tomas Gomez enters Biola as a true Freshman from Bogota, Colombia and Carlos Solorzano joins Biola as a graduate student, transferring from Ouchita Baptist.

The BU squad will hit the court on Friday for its season-opener, before taking on Caltech and Redlands for their first two countable competitions.
