Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ethan McGarvey, Assistant Sports Information Director

Eagles Soar

The men’s soccer squad picked up a win in its 2021 home opener, shutting out Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-0.

LA MIRADA --- Biola toughed it out on Wednesday night, outdueling the visiting Toros by a final score of 2-0. The shutout marked the first home match for the Eagles in 2021, as the team remained perfect and moved to a 2-0 overall record.

The first half belonged to BU. Through the initial 45 minutes of action, the Eagles took seven shots and three corners. The team was also favored in the possession battle, controlling the ball for 53 percent of the first half.

A plethora of opportunities resulted in a goal for Biola in the 20th minute. Pontus Gitselov began the run, taking the ball down the right side and into the box. The forward turned and sent a cross to the back post. Oscar Rubalcava was at the receiving end of the pass and used his right foot to reach the back of the net.

The senior logged his fifth-career goal to give Biola a 1-0 lead on Wednesday night. The rest of the first half went by quietly, as the Eagles carried the one goal lead into the halftime break.

The physicality of the matchup rose more and more as the match continued into the second half. Both teams battled for the ball but were a bit reckless, as the Eagles and Toros combined for five yellow cards and one red card.

Cal State Dominguez Hills picked up the red card in the 63rd minute, forcing the visitors to play a man down for the remainder of the contest. The free kick for Biola following the card came just outside of the box.

Theo Le Calve stepped up for the set piece and nailed a beautiful shot that landed just inside of the back post. The lefty nabbed his first score as an Eagle, extending Biola's advantage to 2-0.

Another 90 minutes of scoreless soccer marked the team's second shutout of the 2021 season. JD Gunn earned the start in goal, grabbing one save on the way to his seventh clean sheet of his career.

The Eagles will return to Al Barbour Field for their next match, taking on Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday at 7:00 pm.
